...Swans are a call to glorious nullification that resounds in attempts to escape corporal existence and despair.
The band first appeared on record in 1982 with a self-titled EP, and its early releases document their search for the musical vocabulary to express their ideas effectively.
Swans' astonishing output since their inceptions in 1982 has seen them progress constantly, veering wildly from proto-industrial grind, to slab-of- noise militant disco, to bad-vibes psychedelic "film" music, to darkly ambient accoustic songs, and now back again, ripping apart all genres, firmly in their own world.

Swans: Swans Are Dead: Pitchfork Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
Swans Are Dead is their aptly named final release; a double live CD culling live recordings from their 1995 and 1997 tours.
The Swans' relentless attack of steamroller percussion, clanging guitar drones, atmospheric keyboards, and the interplay of Gira's deep vocals with that of his counterpart chantuese Jarboe make for a slow- motion sonic catharsis, repeated over and over in every song.
The brutal repetition in Swans' music is mirrored by a repetition of lyric themes-- pain and pleasure, death and life, love and hate-- which seem simple enough, but Gira recognizes them as deeply integral parts of human existence that cannot be fully comprehended.

 SWANS - Review/live/Chicago Reader
Swans were remarkable in that almost every album they made over the course of 15 years was better - or at least more interesting - then the one before it.
It's especially striking because if Swans have ever been about anything, they've been about catharsis - an ecstatic state in a broad sense, but the flip side of the bright euphoria of party music - and I would have expected a guy like Gira to be a bit possessive of his demons.
These shifts have cost Swans a few fans: the early grind with its lurid images of rape, prostitution, and slavery has attracted a strongly misogynist element that reacted to Jarboe's presence like a roomful of vampires to holy water.

Their early music was typified by slow and grinding guitar noise, and pounded drums, punctuated by Gira's morbid and violent lyrics, usually barked or shouted.
However the album has been regarded by some fans as a major disappointment, as much of the early line-up was replaced by session musicians and the distinctive heavy guitar element of their earlier work toned down significantly in favor of folk and world music elements.
Michael Gira's disillusionment with their MCA exploits led to White Light From The Mouth Of Infinity (1991), a successful blending of earlier hard rock and later pop styles.

New weapons are added to the Swans' arsenal, along with a variety of seemingly inconceivable approaches: the harrowing "Fool" is almost all piano and (sung!) vocals; several songs feature female background singers (serving more as an instrument than harmony).

True, that was the sound of Swans when Gira first formed the band in New York City back in 1981, but today, to say that Swans' music has matured doesn't even begin to describe the perfect and beguiling beast it has become.
Most of Swans' ultimate development can be traced back to their watershed 1987 release Children of God - a stunning album that finally provided a reference point for dealing with the harsh invincibility of the band's heaviness.
Swans followed that work with 1989's The Burning World, an atypical outing that paired the band with a producer (Bill Laswell) for the first and only time and encouraged the lighter side of things to shine through.

Swans are an ever-evolving group of musicians, led by singer, songwriter, guitarist and producer Michael Gira, and his ubiquitous companion, keyboardist, songwriter and vocalist Jarboe.
Swans dwell in relative, if not complete, obscurity in the pop world, despite having influenced the entire spectrum of the now-popular "industrial" music scene, including acts like Ministry, Skinny Puppy, nine inch nails and Rage Against the Machine.
The Swans' sound has evolved out of the early punk and downtown Manhattan no-wave scene, from plodding, harsh, extreme blast of guitar and drum noise to 140 beats per minute, drum machine dance music terror to exotically beautiful and shimmering musical textures that are almost medieval in their melodic structure and execution.
