Uma in high spirits, says Swaraj
Senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader Sushma Swaraj said Saturday that former Madhya Pradesh chief minister Uma Bharti was "in very high spirits and determined to remain in jail as long as the state government wants her to be".
Stressing that the case against Bharti was 'false', Swaraj said as the BJP started pursuing the campaign vehemently "the mind of Sonia worked and she told her law minister to dig out all cases against BJP and NDA leaders".
On Karnataka Chief Minister N Dharam Singh's reported statement that the matter was now between court and Uma Bharti, Swaraj said it was not correct, noting that the district and sessions court had said that the government had the liberty to move the judical magistrate citing fresh grounds in dropping cases against Uma Bharti.

Non-Violent Resistance and Social Transformation: Part II Swaraj and Sarvodaya   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Swaraj in its fullest sense is perfect freedom from all bondage and, for Gandhi, it could be equated with moksha or liberation.
"Swaraj" Gandhi once wrote, "is the abandonment of the fear of death."1 Swaraj is vitally connected with the capacity for dispassionate self-assessment, ceaseless self-purification, continuous self- restraint, progressive self-realization, and growing swadeshi or self-reliance.
Swaraj can be derived from satya (for self-rule is the expression of the intrinsic truth of the individual) and swadeshi can be derived from ahimsa (for complete non-violence requires full self-reliance).

Swaraj of Gandhi 1   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Swaraj literally means self-rule, and during Gandhi’s time it was the aim of the freedom movement, synonymous with independence from the British rule.
For he deftly dissected the term swaraj, showing its direct and pressing relevance to the individual, and hinting the irrelevance of the nation to which one projects the power of rulership or Raj.
The reader of Hind Swaraj is assumed to understand that revolutionary actions on the part of individuals is necessary to achieve national independence, but this action is generally to be taken as part of a collective.

Indian independence movement - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A total of 1,650 rounds were fired, killing 379 persons and wounding 1,137 in the episode, which dispelled wartime hopes and goodwill in a frenzy of postwar reaction.
India's option for an entirely original path to obtaining swaraj (self-rule, sometimes translated as Home Rule or Independence) was due largely to Mohandas Gandhi, commonly known as "Mahatma" (or Great Soul.) A native of Gujarat who had been educated in Britain, he was an obscure and unsuccessful provincial lawyer.
The Indian political spectrum was further broadened in the mid-1920s by the emergence of both moderate and militant parties, such as the Swaraj Party.

 Swaraj - What is Swaraj?
As Pinto explicates, "The principal theme of Hind Swaraj is the moral inadequacy of western civilization, especially its industrialism, as the model for free India." Gandhi was particularly critical of the deeply embedded principles of 'might is right' and 'survival of the fittest'.
As Gandhi states, "It is swaraj when we learn to rule ourselves." The real goal of the freedom struggle was not only to secure political azadi (independence) from Britain, but rather to gain true swaraj (liberation and self-rule).
Gandhi wanted all those who believed in swaraj: (1) to reject and wholly uproot the British raj (rule) from within themselves and their communities; and, (2) to regenerate new reference points, systems, and structures that enable individual and collective self-development.

As you may know, the village (and villager) was at the centre of Gandhi's thought insofar as India's social and political organisation was concerned, at least, the type of social and political organisation that he wanted to see for India.
As with all of Gandhi's ideas, Gram swaraj should be understood and viewed within the context of the twin beacons of Truth and nonviolence.
However, put simply, the fundamental concept of Gram swaraj is that every village should be its own republic, "independent of its neighbours for its own vital wants and yet interdependent for many others in which dependence is necessary," according to Gandhi, writing in 1942.

Even as loyalist pressures cast a long shadow on political currents that were to influence the Indian elite of the late nineteenth century, rapidly deteriorating economic conditions also led to a heightened degree of radicalization amongst the most advanced sections of the new Indian intelligentsia.
Best remembered for his slogan "Swaraj is my birth-right ", he was one of the first to call for complete freedom from British rule, and fought a long and sometimes lonely political struggle against the forces of "moderation" that held sway over the Indian National Congress in the early part of the last century.
"Swaraj" was reinterpreted to mean "self-rule" as a colony, and rather than fighting the colonial power, the Congress decided to cooperate with it in effecting "reforms".

Hind Swaraj appeared first in installments in the pages of Indian Opinion, a newspaper founded and edited by Gandhi, and in 1909 was published as a book, though it was proscribed at once by the Government of Bombay.
Throughout, Gandhi remains clear that the replacement of white rulers by brown rulers would be of little consequence to the people if the new set of rulers governed by the same principles, with the same objectives, and with a similar commitment to principles of modern civilization.
There seems even less reason today to view Hind Swaraj as a merely Luddite or romantic document: in its ecological wisdom alone, and in its profound sense that there must be limits to human consumption, wants, and addiction to technological solutions, it remains an enduring and endearing work.
