Swarm-semiotics   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
A swarm has been defined as a set of (mobile) agents which are liable to communicate directly or indirectly (by acting on their local environment) with each other, and which collectively carry out a distributed problem solving.
At all levels these swarms are engaged in distributed problem solving based on an infinitely complicated web of semetic interaction patterns which in the end can only be explained through reference to the actual history of the body system, evolution.
The swarm of cells constituting a human body should be seen as a swarm of swarms, i.e., a huge swarm of overlapping swarms of very different kinds.

The Swarm concept consists of a constellation of three satellites in three different polar orbits between 400 and 550 km altitude.
Swarm will also provide monitoring of the time-variability aspects of the geomagnetic field, this is a great improvement on the current method of extrapolation based on statistics and ground observations.

The particle swarm optimizer was compared to a benchmark for genetic algorithms in Davis [1]: the extremely nonlinear Schaffer f6 function.
The particle swarm paradigm found the global optimum each run, and appears to approximate the results reported for elementary genetic algorithms in Chapter 2 of [1] in terms of the number of evaluations required to reach certain performance levels.
The adjustment toward pbest and gbest by the particle swarm optimizer is conceptually similar to the crossover operation utilized by genetic algorithms.
