SWATOW (also Shan`toze)), a port of China, in the province of Kwang-tung, opened to foreign trade in 1869.
The town is situated at the mouth of the main branch of the river Han, which 30 miles inland flows past the great city of Ch'aochow Fu or Tai-chu (Tie-chu), while the surrounding country is more populous and full of towns and villages than any other part of the province.
Swatow is also a great emigration port and was the scene of many kidnapping adventures on the part of foreigners in the early days.

In JFS 1970-71 under North Vietnam is the listing "24 USSR Swatow Class" with a Note: "30 Swatow class motor gunboats built in China were transferred in 1958, and 20 in 1964 to replace those lost in action.

  Glossary: Swatow ware
A large family of export ceramics of the 16th and 17th century was called Swatow ware in the West and are still referred to by this name.
Swatow wares are characterized by sand adhering to the bottom of individual pieces and are usually associated with over-glaze enamel decoration using a distinctive palette dominated by iron red, turquoise and fl.
At least one kiln producing this "Swatow" ware have now been discovered in Zhangzhou prefecture in Fujian province why the name Zhangzhou ware is now preferred by many Chinese scholars.

 Swatow (Shantou) information
A minor fishing village until the 19th century, Swatow, as it was then known in the West, developed rapidly as a seaport and commercial center after it was opened to foreign trade in 1860.
Swatow city itself is small and flat, but across the harbor is a large green and rocky island where there are a few good foreign homes and a mission or two.
The reason is that from Swatow come almost all the fine handkerchiefs and drawn linen work sold in the States.

 American Baptist Mission - History
The port of Swatow, located on the China coast 150 miles north of Hong Kong, was opened in 1860, and at that time the mission work started in Hong Kong was transferred there.
The Swatow Chinese Christian laymen shared the Good News of the Gospel message, and two other churches, the Hong Kong Swatow Baptist Church and the Shamshuipo Swatow Baptist Church, were begun in 1948 and 1952 respectively.
The Swatow Baptist Churches have grown to 21 churches and chapels stemming from the three which were here before the missionaries arrived in 1954.

Swatow is best known for their fresh-made noodles and dumplings in soup.
In fact some of the dishes at Swatow are IMO hard to eat because of a greasy flavour.
I happen to prefer their noodles to Swatow, but noodles being Swatow's specialty, that is certainly open to much debate.

 USS Asheville
Asheville remained at Foochow until 5 December, when she sailed for Tsingtao, to be present during the transfer of the former German-leased territory of Kiaochow from Japanese authority to Chinese under the 1922 Japanese-Chinese Shantung Agreement.
During much of April and the first few days of fay, Asheville had lain off the port of Amoy, observing conditions there, until sailing for Swatow on 9 May. When she arrived at the latter port, she received word that Japanese forces were bombing and shelling Amoy, and would soon attempt a landing.
The gunboat immediately sailed to return to Swatow, arrived there on the afternoon of 11 May just as sailors of the Japanese Special Naval Landing Force were entering the city, and dropped anchor in the outer harbor, near the British destroyer HMS Diana.

Swatow ware became popular in Europe during Dutch trade in the 16th and 17th century.
Around 1608, this ill-fated vessel sank with its valuable cargo of mostly blue and white Swatow ware from Zhangzhou and was probably headed for the markets in Malaysia or Indonesia, which were well-established consumers of Chinese ceramics.

For two people I would reccommend ordering a selection of three dishes (which will cost around C$24), but be prepared to eat the same meal the next day, beacuse I doubt you would be able to polish it off in one sitting.
