Sway Bar   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
In the basic form, a sway bar is a rod that runs from one side of a car to the other with equal length arms roughly 90 degrees to the rod on the ends.
Typically the sway bar is mounted in isolastic bushings mounted near the ends of the bar.
The effectiveness of a sway bar is a result of several things but for the most part, the larger in diameter the sway bar is the stifler it will be and the stifler the suspension will be when it comes into play.

Sway bar - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A sway bar increases the suspension's roll stiffness -- its resistance to roll in turns, independent of its spring rate in the vertical direction.
Some anti-roll bars, particularly those intended for use in auto racing, are adjustable, allowing their stiffness to be altered by increasing or reducing the length of the lever arms.
The use of anti-roll bars allows the weight transfer of the front and rear wheels to be adjusted separately, compensating for other factors such as unequal front/rear weight balance and "tuning" the vehicle's handling characteristics.

 Mustang Anti-sway Bars
If an anti-roll bar is already required at both ends of the vehicle to achieve adequate roll stiffness, use an anti-roll bar of greater stiffness/diameter at the end of the vehicle where reduced cornering force is desired, and use a less-stiff/smaller-diameter bar at the other end.
A number of factors determine the stiffness of a sway bar, including the bar's thickness and length, the length of the swing arm or lever, the bar material, and the bar's attachment method.
But if two sway bars differ only in their diameters, all you need to know is that their relative stiffness (torsional rigidity) is proportional to the 4th power of their diameters.

 Sway Bar Disconnects
The solid front axle sway bar is not too difficult to disconnect; a wrench to hold the bolt and a socket to remove the nut.
Thus if the purpose of a sway (or anti-roll) bar is to resist body roll, then the most efficient setup is to have the ends of the sway bar as close to parallel to the ground at rest as possible.
So, when measuring for new end-links, be sure and place the sway bar ends in the proper orientation (usually horizontal) and measure the distance from the center of the bar to the center of the attachment point on the axle or suspension arm.

 Sway Bar FAQs
The diameter of the bar and the length (and angle) of the "Arms" determine the "stiffness" of the bar..
The IPD sway bar kit for a normal ride height car (rather than one fitted with their stiffer and lower springs) consists of a 1" diameter front A/S bar and a 7/8" diameter rear A/S. These are roughly 3 times stiffer front and rear than stock.
sway bars essentially connect to either suspension arm and the front bar is "grounded" to the frame (as a talk show host must be grounded with some basic skills and has be assertive in order to manipulate the often rowdy guests).

 rear sway bar
In hard cornering sway bars take the force that drives an outside wheel up into the car and distribute it to the inside, so the car leans less and the tires stay flat - in better alignment - to better conduct forces to the ground.
All SHOs 89-99 can use the same rear sway bars, so finding and swapping a heaver bar is relatively easy to do and is one of the first things a owner desiring to improve road handling in their 96-99 SHO may undertake.
Until that day I leave you with the thought that the under-appreciated 23 mm rear bar may actually be the optimal compromise between ride and handling, at least for those with families who may not share the drivers enthusiasm, at least to the same extent.

The best way to determine the location of these holes is to hold the sway bar, with the frame mounting brackets and bushings attached, in place and mark the holes as far rearward and outward as possible to allow frame clearance.
The H-body sway bar has a bend in the center which should face upwards to allow clearance for a jack to lift the car in the center of the rear subframe.
The marking of the location of these holes should be made after the sway bar is securely mounted in place, centered, and the suspension is fully loaded so that the end links will stand almost vertical.

DFWHyundais DIY Elantra Sway Bar Upgrade
A sway bar (also known as an anti-sway bar or stabilization bar) is, in its simplest version, a torsion bar (torsional spring) that runs across the width of the car between the front or rear wheels, with a 90 degree bend at each end.
The larger the diameter of the sway bar, the stiffer it is and the better it reduces the roll.
Sway bars that come on the Tiburon are, except for diameter, exactly the same as those on the Elantra.

 Anti-Sway Bar Bushing Q&A
Look at a real race car sway bar and you will find that the anti-sway bar is not even mounted in a bushing...they use spherical rod ends as 'bushings' to hold the bar in place in order to REDUCE friction between the bar and the 'bushing'.
The bar will still twist the same as it did before and will still "pull down" as much, but if the bushing material deflects under this load it will not transfer the "pulling down" force as quickly or efficiently as a "stiffer" bushing will to the body structure.
By lubricating the anti-sway bar bushings (the rear bushings, anyhow), you may decrease the friction to the point where the bar could 'react' to the twist force by moving side-to-side instead of creating the 'pull down' force on the body.

Understanding Sway Bar Function - Stock Car Magazine
While the sway bar doesn't have anything to do with sway, it is one of several items that provide some control over weight shift when the car tilts to the right in a left turn.
The function of a sway bar is usually to prevent weight transfer from one side to the other in cornering situations.
With a sway bar able to control the weight shift, it would be easy to come to the conclusion that we could make a rigid bar and bolt it to the lower control arms and stop all the weight shift.

 SAS sway bar installation
As I recall, the ends of the bar should point downward as you attempt to put it into position, and the steering rack must be pushed as far forward as possible.
The trick to connecting the end bolts is to either load the suspension or pry the end of the sway bar down; I used the latter method and it worked fine.
If you drive these bars to the limit, you'll have to let off the throttle just enough to transfer just enough weight from the front wheels to the rear, and then you'll need to be aware enough to manage that transfer.

 SS #670 Sway bars
I upgraded to the Hotchkis 2204 sway bar set which uses 1 7/16" (36.5 mm) front and 1" (25.4 mm) rear tubular bars.
I've always preferred stiffer sway bars in my cars and the Hotchkis matched set works for me. The stiffer spring rate and polyurethane bushings cut body roll as expected and also greatly improve straight line stability; at freeway speeds, the car settles down much sooner after dodging small road debris.
The symptom of this is when the sway bar needs to rotate (for example when stopping or launching) it will hang up and give a loud CLUNK when it breaks loose.

Sway Bar Install. Complete tech article show you how!
Connected to each control arm, the pressure applied from cornering twists the sway bar against the lean, causing a reaction that produces a lifting force on the outside of the body and a downward force on the inside of the body.
The reason is that you have to make sure that the sway bar does not interfere with any of the suspension components throughout the entire suspension cycle--which on this truck is over 8 inches.
Before we even had all four bolts snugged down, it became obvious that with this configuration, the sway bar would hit the Pitman arm of the manual steering box before the truck was fully aired down.

This is usually caused by having a factory installed front bar and either no rear bar or a very lightweight rear bar in comparison to the front bar.
In comparison, stepping down to a 7/8" Addco bar lowers the resistance to 382% (note that with the 7/8" bar there is too much understeer so it is not recommended).

COOL CATS: Advanced Info: Sway Bars
If you're using aftermarket lower control arms, the location of the sway bar mounts is somewhat different than stock, meaning your sway bar will be lower to the ground and closer to the rear differential (pumpkin) cover.
The old front bar is removed in 4 places: the 2 brackets that hold it onto the framerail, and the 2 end links, one on each A-arm.
If you don't currently have a sway bar, the holes are there in the stock (or aftermarket) lower control arms, so it's a simple 4-bolt installation to put one in.

 Sway Bars
Since the sway bar only resists twisting (its basically a countoured torsion bar) any up down motion experienced by both sides of the suspension is not influenced by the sway bar.
The stock bar is held on by clamps that wrap around the front lower torsion arms and squeeze the bushings holding the sway bar against the torsion arm.
The reason for this is that the brazillian bus sway bar is slightly smaller than the German one and the torsion arm is slightly different.
