  Noah Haynes Swayne - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Noah Haynes Swayne (December 7, 1804 - June 8, 1884) was an American jurist and politician.
While serving as U.S. Attorney, Swayne was elected in 1834 to the Columbus city council, and in 1836 to the state legislature.
Swayne remained on the court until 1881, twice lobbying to be elevated to the position of Chief Justice, though he never was.

SWAYNE, Noah Haynes, jurist, born in Culpeper county, Virginia, 7 December, 1804; died in New York city, 8 June, 1884.
His ancestor, Francis Swayne, came to this country with William Penn, and the farm on which he settled near Philadelphia is still in possession of his descendants.
Noah's father, Joshua, removed to Virginia, and the son, after receiving a good education in Waterford, Virginia, studied law in Warrenton, was admitted to the bar in 1823, removed to Ohio, and in 1825 opened an office in Coshocton.

Includes letters from the Swayne family to George B. about baseball and miscellaneous issues, valuable largely for their autographs; records concerning the estate of Franz Mohr, a friend of the family; the Milwaukee West Side High School; and the Deutsche Gesellschaft von Milwaukee.
Swayne was by this time a retired gentleman of leisure, whose main interests were good living, restoration of health, reading, baseball, and his pet charities.

In the regional tug-of-war that culminated in the Judiciary Act of 1862, Ohio governmental, business, and legal interests grasped the initiative, attempting to insure that court reform would furnish the state a Supreme Court justice and membership in a circuit with other states having similar economic and legal interests.
Ohio Republicans accented "the intimacy of [Ohio] business intercourse between" Indiana and Michigan and conveyed their "anxiety" that Noah Haynes Swayne be appointed to replace the recently deceased John McLean.
22 Shortly thereafter, Lincoln appointed Samuel Miller of Iowa, David Davis of Illinois, and Noah Haynes Swayne of Ohio to the Supreme Court.

 Swayne, Wager
Assigned first to Memphis, Tennessee, and then Prospect, Tennessee, Swayne served with the Provost Marshal's office.  In late 1863, the Forty-Third Ohio received furlough back to Ohio.  Most of the men quickly reenlisted, including Swayne.
Upon completing his military service, Swayne established a law practice in Toledo, Ohio.  He moved to New York City in 1881, where he established a prominent law firm, representing primarily telegraph and railroad companies.  He died on December 18, 1902.
