Swazzle - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A swazzle (swatchel) is a device made of two strips of metal bound around a cotton tape reed.
The swazzle is positioned between the tongue and the roof of the mouth so that expired air passes between the two metal strips, causing the reed to vibrate.
Because the swazzle is small, positioned in the back of the mouth and must be repeatedly moved during a performance, there is a risk that it may be swallowed while in use.

Some people can produce an excellent and clear voice for Punch without the use of a Swazzle, an obvious advantage as far as clarity is concerned, but this voice lacks the hard rasp of a swazzle-produced voice and also the ear-splitting trumpet-like quality of the noises that an exultant or incensed Punch emits.
Certainly, some books on Punch and Judy have given instructions for making a swazzle which in practice, would be impossible to use and one feels the author must have been deceived by the Showman who was induced by soft words and hard cash to "reveal" his secret.
Now the making of the Swazzle: Basically it is two strips of metal 12mm wide and 19mm, 22mm or 25mm long according to the preference of the worker and, presumably, the proportions of the inside of his mouth.

 Weird Words: Swazzle
Swazzle is a modified form of the older swatchel; this might be a variant of swatch but is more probably from German schwätzeln, taken in turn from schwatzen, to chatter or tattle.
In the latter part of that century, the swatchel-cove was the Punch-and-Judy man or his assistant who did the supporting patter and who interpreted Punch’s less intelligible squawks, and the swatchel-box was the booth in which the Punchman stood.
Incidentally, there are some risks attached to using the swazzle: tradition requires that the performer shall swallow it at least twice before he can call himself a Punch-and-Judy man.

 Deeper Investigations
We can go further in that even the swazzle (in Italian pivetta) may have existed in ancient times (the swazzle is an English word denoting an instrument placed in the mouth of a glove puppeteer to alter his/her voice to a squeak, as for the well-known Punch character).
Ob is one who speaks from between the joints of his body and his elbow joints, while yidde’oni is one who places the bone of a yid’oa’ (a beast or bird) in his mouth where it speaks of itself.
Suffice it to say that the swazzle instrument was in use by the Chinese since at least the 11th century.
