In 1978 she was purchased by PandO and had her appearance dramatically altered by the removal of her dummy funnel, reshaping of her remaining funnel, and the addition of extra cabins.
In 1999/2000 Victoria was chartered for the Union-Castle Line centenary voyage and had her funnel repainted in that company's livery.
Her two Swedish built Gotaverken 9 cylinder engines have a combined output of 25,200 SHP which give her a cruising speed of 20 knots, although she achieved 25 knots during her trials.

The Hamburg America Line (also known as the Hamburg-Amerika Line and the Hamburg Line) was established in Hamburg, Germany in 1847 under the name Hamburg Amerikanische Packetfahrt Actien Gesellschaft (HAPAG) for shipping across the Atlantic Ocean.
Its liner SS Amerika was the first ship to warn the RMS Titanic of icebergs.
The Hamburg line docked in Hoboken, New Jersey rather than Manhattan.

An operating company Atlantic Container line was founded in 1965 by Olaf Wallenius, the main cause for founding the company was to handle growing competition, as well as raising the big investments needed for the containerization of the liner traffic on the North Atlantic.
Apart from Wallenius Lines (OW), the first partners were Swedish America Line(SAL/Brostroms), The Transatlantic Steamship Company Limited (RABT) and Holland America Line (HAL) Each of these four partners ordered a combined lo/lo-ro/ro car carrier, which were revolutionary at the time, being the first ships of that type in deep sea traffics.
SAL turned this part of HAL into a Dutch subsidiary company called Intercontinental Transport B.V. In 1976 the G1’s were extended by 25 meters at shipyards in Germany, Sweden and Japan.

When she was launched on September 9, 1946, Swedish American officials were keen to point out the yacht-like appearance of the ship, and went so far as to proclaim her the “ship of today and tomorrow.” Never before has a promotional cliché been more prophetic.
Her career with the Swedish American Line would be short-lived thereafter, however, as the line had invested in new and larger tonnage with the Kungsholm in 1953 and the Gripsholm in 1957.
Her career under East German flag was a long one, and in 1986 the aging Swedish vessel was replaced and sold.

 Sjoberg Dies
According to Swedish writer Folke Isaksson, Leif Sjöberg was "a student with a remarkable zeal for education." While pursuing studies in philology and literary history at Uppsala University, he accumulated numerous credits, earning a master’s in philosophy there in 1954, a Ph.D. in 1968, and an honorary doctorate in 1980.
He had special expertise on the Swedish poet Gunnar Ekelöf (sometimes known as Sweden’s T.S. Eliot) and was one of his closest confidants; a collection of their correspondence, still unpublished, is housed in Uppsala University library.
A glimpse of the relationship between Leif Sjöberg and Sara Lidman is evident in a profile of her telecast in the late spring of 2000, with a "cameo" appearance by Leif Sjöberg, who with biographer Birgitta Holm worked on the preparation of the program.

The Cuba, Mexico and Gulf line was reopened in 1919 and four new 8,800 ton, two-funnelled ships, MAASDAM, EDAM, LEERDAM and SPAARNDAM, were completed in 1921 - 22 for an augmented service with accomodation for 14 first, 174 second and 800 third-class passengers, the latter being catered for by calls at Spanish ports.

In 1911 the Swedish America Line opened a direct route from Gothenburg to New York This was a popular way for the Finns particularly in the 1920's.
Parts of the Swedish passenger lists are on computer and released on a CD called Emigranten.
Gothenburg was the biggest harbor for emigration in Sweden until 1951, when the traffic of The Swedish American Line was canceled.

Many passengers on the first few voyages of Holland-American Line's Prinsendam believed (some had read) that it was a new ship.
One table-mate enjoying a suite (not the ones with the flood) often mentioned how relaxed the Odyssey was at breakfast or lunch, rubbing in the contrast with the long lines and scarce seating in the Lido.
Some lines offer tours highlighting this epic struggle, but none was available from Holland-American, unfortunately.
