Invest in Sweden Agency - Top marks for Swedish meteorology
Swedish research in meteorological science is highly regarded and in many cases meets the highest international standards, according to a new report by a multinational panel of experts.
The International Valuation of Meteorology, commissioned by the Swedish Research Council, was based on the findings of six leading meteorology specialists from the U.S., Germany, Norway and the Netherlands.
The panel examined 23 Swedish meteorology research projects and concluded that 15 were either “outstanding” or “excellent”.

Before 1955: Numerical Models and the Prehistory of GCMs
The Meteorology Project ran its first computerized weather forecast on the ENIAC in 1950.
The Royal Swedish Air Force Weather Service in Stockholm was first in the world to begin routine real-time numerical weather forecasting (i.e., with broadcast of forecasts in advance of weather).
The Institute of Meteorology at the University of Stockholm, associated with the eminent meteorologist Carl-Gustaf Rossby, developed the model.

So when journalists called at the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry in Mainz, Germany, where Crutzen is director of the Air Chemistry Division, they interviewed one of his senior colleagues instead.
Crutzen emphasized the tropics in his Nobel lecture on the role of ozone on tropospheric chemistry presented at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences last December.
Crutzen is also working with Christoph Brühl, a colleague at the institute, to compare data on ozone and chlorine and fluorine species in the stratosphere obtained from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite with data calculated from a two-dimensional model.

Apart from surveys and mapping the main objective was to carry out a wide ranging programme of scientific investigations with particular interest in discovering whether climatic fluctuations similar to those observed in the Arctic were also occurring in Antarctica.
Norway was mainly responsible for meteorology and topographical surveys, Britain for geology and Sweden for glaciology.
Meteorology: an improved understanding was developed of the importance of the Antarctic ice-sheets in regulating the world's climate.

The first rockets launched into space from Sweden
For a number of years the Institute of Meteorology at the University of Stockholm had been doing ground based studies of noctilucent clouds and when small inexpensive research rockets became readily available at the end of the 1950's the Institute's director, Prof Bert Bolin, advocated their use for upper atmospheric studies.
The project, called Kronogård 62, was a major undertaking for the Institute of Meteorology, and just as the year before personnel was "borrowed" from various government agencies and recruited from technical universities and even high schools.
The research into the physics of the upper atmosphere started in Kronogård has continued very successfully at the Institute of Meteorology and the young atmospheric scientist starting his researches in Kronogård, Georg Witt, is now retired from his position as professor of atmospheric physics at the University of Stockholm.
