As the leader of the Swedish Social Democrats he was the first head of government in the country of that affiliation.
As Prime Minister he brought Sweden into the League of Nations and was personally active as a delegate within it.

The Prime Minister or statsminister is the head of Government in Sweden.
At the introduction of the new office in 1876, the Prime Minister for Justice became Prime Minister, while the Prime Minister for Foreign Affairs was nominally demoted to Minister for Foreign Affairs.
The Minister for Foreign Affairs did however continue to be styled as Excellency, an honour shared only with the Prime Minister.

After the 1979 parliamentary elections he served as Minister for Foreign Affairs in the three-party centre-right government under Thorbjörn Fälldin.

Nordic prime, finance and economy ministers meeting in Oslo for the annual session of the Nordic Council are to hold a summit on the upcoming European Monetary Union which is due to begin on Jan. 1, 1999.
Ministers are expected to compare notes on how their countries will address their economic situation as the rest of the European Union (save the United Kingdom and Greece) move over to the euro at the beginning of the year.
Prime Ministers were expected to call for close contacts between the Nordic capitals, as the date for EMU to start approaches, and evaluations have to be made after the euro has functioned for some months.

He had the following ministerial posts; Minister of Education 1969-1973, Minister of Housing 1973-1976, Deputy Prime Minister 1982-1986 and following the assassination of Olof Palme in 1986 Ingvar Carlsson became the new Prime Minister or Statsminister and party leader.
The Social Democrats lost the elections in 1991, but Carlsson returned to power after the elections in 1994 and was succeeded by Göran Persson both as Prime Minister and party leader in 1996.
