Swedish Trade Union Confederation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Swedish Trade Union Confederation (Swedish: Landsorganisationen i Sverige, literally "Land Organisation in Sweden"), commonly referred to as LO, is an umbrella organisation for sixteen Swedish trade unions that organise "blue collar" workers.
The member unions are fully independent, with the role of the Confederation limited to the co-ordination of wage bargaining, international activities, trade union education and other areas.
While its Danish sister organisation, the Danish Confederation of Trade Unions, cut its formal ties to the country's Social Democratic party in 1995, the Swedish Trade Union Confederation maintains a strong cooperation with the Social Democrats.

In 2002, about 80% of Swedish wage earners are members of trade unions, and within certain industrial branches the percentage is even higher.
The first unions in Sweden were organized in the 1870s, but for a long time the movement remained numerically weak relative to the rest of industrialized Europe.
At the end of 1992, however, the Swedish Trade Union Confederation, which is closely allied to the Social Democratic Party, had 2.23 million members and was thus the largest organization of any kind in Sweden.

Saltsjobaden Agreement between the Swedish Trade Union Confederation, the L.O., and the Swedish Employers' Confederation, the S.A.F. This accord signified a turning point to a tumultuous relationship between labour and capital that had been marred by forty years of severe industrial strife.
In 1951, economists Gosta Rehn and Rudolf Meidner of the Swedish Trade Union Confederation (L.O.) responded by devising the 'Swedish model' to simultaneously achieve full-employment, moderate inflation, decreased wage inequality, and increased economic growth.
For this reason, the 'Swedish model' was eventually endorsed in 1955 by both wings of the labour movement, the S.A.P. and the L.O., and implemented in a coordinated effort after 1956.
