Tennessee Williams' Sweet Bird of Youth, as produced by the Theater Guild of Webster Groves is a decidedly mixed bag of excellence and disappointment.
She knew her lines, and she performed well enough not to diminish the rest of the performance, but she was strangely without passion in her portrayal, seeming to be more focused on her lines than the character, a shame because the role of the Princess is one of the more delicious roles in modern theater.
Sweet Bird of Youth will be performed May7th, 8th and 9th at 8:00 PM and May 10th at 2:00 PM at the Theater Guild in Webster Groves.

Though Tennessee Williams’s Sweet Bird of Youth (1959) was his biggest box office success since Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1955), the play came to be regarded as an example of the playwright in decline.

I suppose this is what happened when I picked up Sweet Bird of Youth -- now I did “watch” the entire movie, but this included a multitude of frustration due to the tape, which experienced random glitches, especially during a ten-minute stretch during the middle in which sound and colours were dropping out.
Sweet Bird of Youth is essentially a melodrama of the Deep South, with all sorts of sketchy, sleazy, and/or troubled characters (unlike my personal experience with the VHS tape, which was a melodrama with a cast of one).
Overall, Sweet Bird of Youth does have some decent actors, and is a fun soap opera, but little more.

Despite the acrid nature of its material, 'Sweet Bird of Youth' is Williams in a relaxed mood as a writer.
The "acrid nature of the material" is Tennessee Williams's lifelong subject: The fate of love and passion, specifically, the doomed collision between the poignant sexual and emotional desires of old age and the attractiveness and ambition of youth.
The older character is always a woman; the youth is always a handsome man and the two of them are inescapably drawn to each other to fulfill their very different needs, against their better judgment.

In one sense, she was a perfect choice to play the aging actress hiding behind the identity of the "Princess Kosmonopolis" in SWEET BIRD OF YOUTH.

Sweet Bird of Youth: review on TheaterMania.com
In the Williamstown Theatre Festival's otherwise successful staging of Tennessee Williams' Sweet Bird of Youth, Cecil has curiously opted to portray Chance Wayne, that archetypal hustler whose main chance resides in his raw animal magnetism, as a whiny, insecure loser from the get-go.
The whole pathos of the play lies in Wayne's gradual realization, at the worldly-wise age of 29, that he'll never live up to his adolescent aspirations -- whether show-biz success or a romantic reunion with Heavenly Finley (Bess Wohl), the tarnished dream girl of his teens.
Sweet Bird of Youth is among the canon of Williams' hothouse dramas, in which repressed sexuality ultimately outs with disastrous consequences all around.
