		"Sweet November" may be a work of romantic hokum about a savage power-yuppie who learns to slow down and discover love in the arms of a quirky, perky girl with a tragic secret -- but as such sappy movies go, this is one that hits all the right notes.
		Keanu Reeves and Charlize Theron proved they have couples chemistry as husband and wife in "The Devil's Advocate." Here they do the opposites-attract thing with great success and use their charisma to overcome what by all rights should be a script full of romantic clichés.

		Based on the 1968 film of the same name, "Sweet November" is the story of a quirky and free-spirited San Franciscan named Sara Deever (Theron) who invites a different man to live with her every month in order to 'help' them-- 'long enough to be meaningful, but short enough to stay out of trouble'.
		Like the 1968 predecessor, the story of "Sweet November" is terribly contrived as it implausibly brings its two romantic leads together and then tries to ante the emotional quotient with a cliché plot twist straight out of "Autumn in New York".
		This 'artificial sweetness' is further exacerbated by the lack of chemistry between the two leads, as well as the limited dramatic range of Reeves, whose stilted and insincere line recitals border on the abrasive.

		"Sweet November" has more in common with last year's ill-fated (if you'll pardon the expression!) "Autumn in New York" than it does with the original 1968 Sandy Dennis movie that inspired it.
		There's no doubt that his best films are the ones where he doesn't have to act too much (witness "The Matrix" and "Speed"), but with a film as emotionally rooted as "Sweet November," he just doesn't have the acting chops to nail the heart on the board and bring it all together.
		As with 1997's "The Devil's Advocate," Theron and Reeves certainly look good together, but "Sweet November" is far from being the effective tear-jerker that it set out to be.

		The film opens with a shot of a naked Nelson getting up out of bed with his current live-in girlfriend (her bare backside is shown before she dons panties and a bra).
		Sweet November succeeds in communicating the idea that a cold, ruthless, soulless existence is no way to live.
