Monstrous Regiment (novel) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Maledict tells Polly that Tonker is actually yet another woman, and distracts Polly from her initial confusion by pointing out that she (though apparently male) is wearing a dress.
Polly tells her that she should go and find her son and pretend to be his father (Jackrum thinks he'd detest the reality), and she does.
Polly and Maledicta rejoin the army, Lofty and Tonker burn down their old school and (probably) become bandits, Shufti moves into Polly's old inn, and Wazzer becomes a member of the royal family's household.

Polly Oliver's Problem, by Kate Douglas Smith Wiggin   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
Oliver’s couch had as many pillows as that of an oriental princess; for Polly’s summers were spent camping in a cañon, and she embroidered sofa-cushions and draperies with frenzy during these weeks of out-of-door life.
Oliver too ill to be anything but reasonable.  After a long talk about her own condition and Polly’s future, she gave a somewhat tearful assent to all his plans for their welfare, and agreed to make the change when a suitable tenant was found for the house.
Polly went upstairs, and, after washing the lunch-dishes in a reflective turn of mind which did away with part of the irksomeness of the task, went into the parlor and sat on a stool at her mother’s feet.

The Project Gutenberg eBook of Polly Oliver's Problem, by Kate Douglas Smith Wiggin
Polly was standing in the highroad where "a wayfaring man, though a fool," could look at her; and when Edgar explained that it was his duty to see her safely to her destination, they all bowed to the inevitable.
Polly had held a consultation with the principal of her school, who had assured her that as she was so well in advance of her class, she could be promoted the next term, if she desired.
Polly with dimples playing hide and seek in rosy cheeks, with dazzling eyes, and laughing lips, and saucy tongue, was sufficiently captivating; but Polly with bright drops on her lashes, with a pathetic droop in the corners of her mouth and the suspicion of a tear in her voice,--this Polly was irresistible.

Sleeve Notes - Britten: The Folksong Arrangements
Gradually the songs that were to be published in 1947 in the third volume appeared in programmes, and certainly during 1945 Sweet Polly Oliver, There's none to soothe, The Ploughboy and The Foggy, Foggy Dew featured at music clubs.
In 1940 Britten had published an article in the American journal Modern Music on 'England and the Folk-Art Problem' in which he remarked, 'The chief attractions of English folksongs are the sweetness of the melodies, the close connection between words and music, and the quiet uneventful charm of the atmosphere.
Two (The Minstrel Boy and How sweet the answer) were performed at the Kammermusiksaal, Graz, by Pears and Britten on 24 April 1957, yet when a group of five were sung at a Victoria and Albert Museum Gallery Chamber Concert on 26 January 1958 they were announced as a 'first performance'.

NY Theatre Wire -- Bruce-Michael Gelbert
Daniels and Katz's virtuoso efforts complemented each other as they realized four young ladies' very different day at the beach in the now playful, now serious or nostalgic "Seashore Girls," to a text by e.e.
Investigating folk song arrangements by Benjamin Britten, Daniels cheerfully recounted the tale of "Sweet Polly Oliver," who donned men's clothes, enlisted in the army, nursed an ailing captain back to health and wound up marrying him, and followed it with a wrenching "O Waly, Waly," an indictment of a false-hearted lover.
Daniels capped a thoroughly irreverent "Oliver Cromwell" by striding offstage after a final "If you want any more, you can sing it yourself" and taking Katz with him.

Oliver cromwell lay buried and dead, Hee-haw, buried and dead, There grew an old apple-tree over his head, Hee-haw, over his head.
The apples were ripe and ready to fall, Hee-haw, ready to fall, There came an old woman to gather them all, Hee-haw, gather them all.
Oliver rose and gave her a drop, Hee-haw, gave her a drop, Which made the old woman go hippety hop, Hee-haw, hippety hop.

Pears has the lightest touch in Sweet Polly, and Tear, starting much faster, gets greater swings in speed.
Lott creates a perfect air in both Sail on, sail on, and How Sweet the Answer, yet is not as excessively dreamy and tender as Pears in the latter.
The Decca version surpasses the others, for me, partly on account of a far snappier Britten rapping the accompaniment out, and partly given Pears’ potent, drastic change in voice and tone on the 3rd, 4th and 6th verses - he leaves out verse five - from brash and bold to exquisitely tender and back again.

Volume 3: British Isles: The Plough Boy [1:57]; There's none to soothe [1:37]; Sweet Polly Oliver [2:15]; The Miller of Dee [1:56]; The foggy, foggy dew [2:34]; O Waly, Waly [4:03]; Come you not from Newcastle [1:10]
Langridge is here a good option, as also in his brilliant rendition of the final song in the first British Isles collection, Oliver Cromwell.
Although both Tear and Lott also make this alteration a significant one, neither slow down as much as Pears in the quieter bits, nor affect such compelling gossamer sweetness.
