Following complaints lodged with the Western Cape Language Committee regarding monolingual direction signs in the City of Tygerberg and the Helderberg Municipality, the Language Committee decided on 6 June 2000 to not only investigate the matter, but to extend the investigation to language policy and planning at all local authorities in the Western Cape.
At the Cape Metropolitan Council and Ashton Municipality internal communication is in Afrikaans, Xhosa and English according to the language preferences of the employees and council members.
It is therefore proposed that every municipality in the Western Cape formulate a practically executable and affordable policy on trilingualism based on an enabling provincial framework and the draft language policy for the Western Cape.

He said he also indicated to Mbeki that the Western Cape government would appreciate it if the national ministers for provincial and local government and social development could personally visit the affected areas and report back to the president.
The Western Cape government has appointed an ad hoc cabinet committee consisting of Van Schalkwyk, Finance MEC Ebrahim Rasool, Agriculture and Ttourism MEC Johan Gelderblom, Transport MEC Tasneem Essop and local government MEC Cobus Dowry to further assess and quantify the damage — particularly to infrastructure, agriculture, local government capacity, and tourism.

By the winter of 1795 the burghers of Swellendam had had enough of the misrule of the Dutch East India Company and on 17th June, lead by their strong man Commandant Delport, they stormed the Drostdy and ejected Landdrost A.A. Faure.
Swellendam continues to be a busy centre of a thriving agricultural district notable for wheat and wool and the largest output of Youngberries in South Africa.

The southernmost point of Africa, Cape Agulhas, is rather boring and not worth a visit unless you have time to spare.
There is also a caravan and chalet park run by the municipality with about a dozen chalets built in Cape Dutch style with thatched roofs, and all set in amongst oak trees (around R115 for a chalet sleeping 4).
Carrying on north past the caves, the road goes over the Swartberg Pass, which is one of the most spectacular mountain passes in the Western Cape, but note that it is a dirt road.
