	Irish Buses in the 70's & 80's \| Those were the days
		Operating in the remote north-west of the country, Lough Swilly is the last vestage of the Londonderry and Lough Swilly Railway Company which at one stage had extensive narrow-guage railways operating in Donegal and Derry.
		In 1961 it passed to Lough Swilly, and I purchased it for preservation in 1981
		Sadly, being a student, I could not afford to keep the bus and sold it to a preservationist in Northern Ireland in 1984, but unfortunately it was scrapped shortly afterwards.

		The two lifeboat operations managers at Lough Swilly and Portrush, Liam Magee and James Heaney are both to receive Letters of Appreciation from the RNLI in recognition of their support and assistance during the service.

		North Prospect, previously known as Swilly, was the name given to the first council estate built in Plymouth during the 1920s, primarily to accommodate officers settling back in Britain following the devastation of the First World War.
		The original Anglo-Saxon word from which Swilly is derived means “farmland.” Before the Second World War much of the locality of what is now North Prospect and the western edge of Beacon Park was known as Swilly.
		At this point, the name “Swilly” and its derivatives “Swill” and “Swilli” became a derogatory term for any “economically deprived” residents of Plymouth, and efforts were made initially to apply the name Swilly only to the council estate and later to get rid of the name altogether.

		Opponents to aquaculture in Lough Swilly believe that the Department of the Marine, the government department in the Republic of Ireland responsible for fishing and fish stocks, has decided to designate Lough Swilly for aquaculture.
		Aquaculture, which already operates in Lough Swilly, is said to cover a water surface area of more than 400 hectares, and the Department of the Marine do not disclose how much expansion in Lough Swilly is proposed.
		If Lough Swilly loses those qualities of unspoilt beauty, scenic routes, wild fish angling, clean seawater and safe beaches, that make the area attractive to tourists then jobs will be threatened as tourism investors seek to develop elsewhere.

		The canal was to have been an integral part of this scheme but a combination of cost, engineering difficulties associated with the varying tidal ranges of the two loughs, and the rapid growth of railways elsewhere led the businessmen to move away from the scheme.

		Originally to have been called the Lough Foyle and Lough Swilly Railway Company, the company was incorporated with its current title in June 1853, with the aim of building a railway line to connect Lough Foyle and Lough Swilly (on either side of the Inishowen Peninsula in North Donegal).

		Licensee, Joseph McFadden of Swilly Inn, Gortlee was found guilty at a special sitting of Letterkenny District Court on Monday of selling intoxicating liquor to persons under 18 years on 13 January, 2006.
		Sgt Galligan established that one had bought two litres of cider from the Swilly Inn off licence from Joseph McFadden, who was the licence nominee of San Bernardo's Ltd, trading as the Swilly Inn.

		One problem with the with the railway was that all its stations were situated a distance away from the villages they served, and in 1929 the company decided that its passengers' needs could best be served by providing a bus service.
		Today the Lough Swilly fleet consists almost entirely of second-hand Leyland Leopard buses and coaches with the newest coach being 11 years old and the vast majority of the fleet being more than 17 years old.
