SPLICEDwire | "Swimfan" review (2002) John Polson, Jesse Bradford, Erika Christensen
"Swimfan" is the kind of thriller that requires, for the plot to move forward, a complete absence of common sense on the part of the hero -- in this case a high school swim team star (Jesse Bradford) with a sultry, psycho, jailbait stalker (Erika Christensen).
Christensen -- Michael Douglas's smack-addicted daughter in "Traffic," a beautiful girl with the heart-shaped face and sly, portentous eyes -- is such a fun, wicked, spiteful villainess that she keeps the flick afloat all by herself.
Of course, stuck with a hero that has no wits, "Swimfan" has to go to implausible extremes to find a climax, and in its final scenes even Christensen can't deliver a convincing performance when called on to take her character to the lunatic fringe.

 SWIMFAN - DVD
Between stuttering cross-cutting, bad visual foreshadowing (that is better described as "visual sledge-hammering"), and a green colour filter that betrays poor Polson's desire to be David Fincher (or, closer, Joel Schumacher), Swimfan is a temple of disaster where the simple-minded bleat their obeisance--Enough for the babysitters' club.
At the end of the day, the most trenchant thing one can offer about a film this stupid is that most attempts at setting tragedy and (especially) infidelity in high school (see also: O and Cruel Intentions) are doomed to the unbearable lightness at the heart of the high school experience.
Swimfan may not deserve to look this good (although it has perhaps the most fascinating subtext of any American movie from last year), but hey, welcome to the world of DVD.

Although Swimfan performs a convincing breaststroke through the same old conventions of suspense that manages to tweak some interest in its premise occasionally, the movie simply settles into its unoriginal format that merely floats along in a pseudo-sensationalistic mode.
Swimfan feels dogmatically tepid in its methodical plotline where we know for certain what twists and turns will occur thanks to a tattered and uninspired script by writers Charles Bohl and Phillip Schneider.
Swimfan demonstrates its exhaustive laps up and down the lanes with rudimentary intrigue, a lackluster plot, and photogenic leads and supporting players who cater to the numbness of the film’s abysmal storyline.

 "Swimfan" - Salon
"Swimfan" is such a blatant imitation of Adrian Lyne's Reaganite thriller that the only thing you can be grateful for is that it's far too clumsy to get people arguing about it or taking it seriously.
The patsy here is Ben (Jesse Bradford of "King of the Hill" and "Bring It On"), a champion high school swimmer and former juvenile delinquent (drugs, thievery, a stint in juvie).
If there's any way that "Swimfan" could have worked, it might have been as a horror-comedy about an inexperienced high-school boy who's certain that he and his girlfriend are going to be together forever, and whose expectations are upset by the temptress in his path.

Swimfan is one of those quick-buck thrillers in which unreasonably attractive actors in their mid 20s play high school teenagers who find themselves having to elude a psychopath/alien/ghost/forest spirit.
While Swimfan at first dabbles in the intriguing concept that Madison is little more than a desperate, obsessed teenager, it eventually takes the most generic way out, and becomes a fairly retarded slasher/psychopath movie, which isn't nearly as interesting as any other alternative.
Swimfan was dumped into theaters during the doldrums of mid-September, with only that idiotically revealing trailer to herald its arrival.

We're pretty sure Swimfan won't be the number one rental when it comes out on DVD and video March 11, 2003 - because it sucked.
At the very beginning of SwimFan, Ben Cronin (Jesse Bradford) cheats on his girlfriend (Shiri Appleby) with the new girl, Madison Bell (Erika Christensen) and from then on Madison becomes a crazy, psycho stalker.
Swimfan has a somewhat impressive teen cast with Erika Christensen of Traffic, Jesse Bradford of Clockstoppers and Shiri Appleby, formerly on Roswell.

He's as cute as a button, and his character in "Swimfan," Ben Cronin, is about as smart as one.
It's excruciating watching the talented Christensen vamp her way through "Swimfan." After a potent turn as Michael Douglas's drug-addicted daughter in "Traffic," Christensen should have been able to choose any project she wanted.
Her logic in selecting "Swimfan" escapes me. Madison is presented so matter-of-fact she becomes one-dimensional, forcing Christensen to play only the surface of what should have been an extremely complex character.

 Swimfan
Swimfan is essentially Fatal Attraction for teens, and it does a horrible job of adapting the psycho mistress story for a younger generation.
The main problem is that it is hard to keep a straight face while watching the movie; it is too tempting to break out into fits of laughter while watching these dumb kids try to go through the motions of an adult thriller/drama.
This movie is a second glimpse at Christensen, who did a good job in Traffic, and serves as more of a coming out for Bradford and Appleby (from Nickelodeon movies and television, respectively), and is not a great way for any of them to establish themselves.

Swimfan (2002): Jesse Bradford, Erika Christensen, Shiri Appleby - PopMatters Film Review
Which is not to say that there's a single plot point in Swimfan that you can't see coming a mile away, except, maybe, the one where Madison, arrested, handcuffed, and hauled off in a cruiser, manages to grab a gun off one of her two handler-cops while they're stopped at a railroad crossing and.
No doubt, distributors calculated Swimfan's arrival in theaters at the nadir of the film year, when competition is slim to none and most potential viewers are otherwise distracted.
Careless and exploitative as it is, Swimfan's greatest offense may be that it offers so little to its target adolescent audience, retreading a trashy 1987 movie about stupid, selfish adults, battering its viewers with a ridiculous morality coda.

Well, the male lead in Fox's dumber-than-a-foul-pole "Swimfan" is obligingly slow on the uptake.
Filmed in New Jersey and suburbs of New York City, "Swimfan" dog-paddles to the finish, while the borderline too-dark cinematography of Giles Nuttgens ("The Deep End") does a flip turn into the "bleach bypass" process.

 Jigsaw Lounge - Swimfan
Swimfan, on the other hand, is marked by a very old-school form of movie misogyny, with Madison a tiresomely familiar brand of bitch-on-wheels.
Such watery shots are rather classier than this TV-movie-ish material deserves — cinematographer Nuttgens was recruited on the basis of his work in the adult-oriented The Deep End, a title which Polson must have regretted not being able to use.
Hence the change in title for  Swimfan, a film made with a very specific demographic target in mind: it was released on the first weekend of the new US high-school term with the smash-and-grab aim of attracting kids out on dates, and worked a treat on those terms, hauling in $11m to top the charts.

Those bewitching orbs have a way of holding on to an adoring look of love a beat or two longer than they should, and that gives her the quality of a slightly possessed baby doll.
Madison, who plays the cello, is immensely sensitive and intelligent, far too forceful a personality to ever speak in icky catchphrases like ''You are soooo busted!'' She's a bad girl disguised as a good girl, and she knows just how to nab a star athlete—by turning seduction into a contest.
''Swimfan'' is proof that a thriller can be sleekly shot, expertly cast, paced with crisp professionalism...and still be a letdown if its twists and turns hold no more surprise than yesterday's weather report.

 TheMovieBoy Review: Swimfan (2002)
The latest thriller to join the ranks of 1987's "Fatal Attraction" and 1993's "The Crush" in the "One-Night-Stand-from-Hell" genre, "Swimfan" offers a classy visual sheen and some stronger-than-usual performances from a young cast to hide the fact that it is utterly derivative and clumsily predictable.
That the setup for "Swimfan" is so surprisingly effective only makes the climax all the more disappointing.
"Swimfan" is a technically well-made suspenser, and even features cursory entertainment value, but its abrupt drop in IQ points as it races to the finish line proves simply too discouraging to let slide.

Jesse Bradford and Erika Christensen star in "Swimfan." But this film could have just as easily been called "Fatal Attraction for Kids." Bradford plays Ben Cronin, a promising high school swimmer, and Christensen is Madison Bell, a classmate who sets her sights on winning Ben's love.
After dropping hints that she wants to be his girl, Madison takes a more direct approach in a swimming pool.

In today's age of filmmaking, when almost anything is possible, it amazes me how often you really can judge a movie by it's trailer.
Case in point, Swimfan is exactly what you'd expect when you see a trailer with a girl stalking a guy, who happens to be a swimmer.
You get all the cheesy scenes, the bland closeups that try to shock you, the standard plot "twists", and a million of the same cinematic angles you'd expect from a wanna-be blockbuster.
