 Pan-American Games
Canada did not officially compete in the 1951 Games (although a small group of Canadian swimmers did give a demonstration in synchronized swimming) but has been a consistent and successful competitor ever since, with Canadian athletes providing many world-class performances in various sports.
The Pan-American Games are a multi-sport, quadrennial festival for the nations of the Western Hemisphere, conducted in a similar manner to the OLYMPIC GAMES and held one year prior to them.
A comparatively recent event, the first Pan-Am Games were held at Buenos Aires (Argentina) in 1951, when 19 nations were officially represented in 18 sports.

Liebowitz, 53, served as an assistant coach for the U.S. men's team at the 1999 Pan American Games and was also an assistant coach at the 1997 World University Games.
He was coach of the United States men's team in the 1995 Pan Am Games and coach of the 1988 Costa Rica Olympic team.
Larry Liebowitz is the new women's swimming head coach at Oregon State, it was announced Aug. 20 by OSU Athletic Director Bob De Carolis.

Cincinnati attorney Ross Wales won numerous awards in his competitive swimming days, including a bronze medal at the 1968 Olympic Games and a silver medal at the 1967 Pan American Games in the 100-meter butterfly.
Wales, who was also an influential administrator for the sport of swimming, is one of eight inductees entering the International Swimming Hall of Fame this weekend in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. He joins current Stanford swim coach Skip Kenney, a former Cincinnati Marlins coach, as this year's honorees with local connections.
Wales was also the vice president and secretary of FINA, swimming's international governing body, and an executive board member of the United States Olympic Committee.

Ted’s heart was always in diving; as a diver, he won the 1940 National YMCA 3-Meter Diving Championship; as a coach, he held the head coaching position at the University of Florida from 1952-1957 and the head coaching position at Florida State for the 1957, ‘58 seasons.
