		Swinburne Island served mostly as a quarantine hospital for those clearly showing signs of airborne infectious diseases such as typhus, yellow fever, or smallpox.
		It appears that Hoffman and Swinburne islands formed the first line of defense against airborne diseases, and if you knew through family stories that an ancestor had yellow fever, typhus, smallpox, etc., the Hoffman-Swinburne records would be the most likely place to look.
		Administrative control of Hoffman and Swinburne islands passed from the State of New York to the federal government at the beginning of 1924, so that too must be considered.

		In 1909, Hoffman Island’s facilities were converted from an immigration detention center to a hospital for the care of measles, scarlet fever, and diphtheria.

	Ellis Island Quarantine, NY: Deaths in Quarantine, 1909-1911
		Most of these individuals were new immigrants en route to Ellis Island and, since they were ill with contagious diseases, they were removed from the ships in the outer harbor of the port of New York by the Medical Inspectors and transferred to these two hospitals.
		Eventually, their families would have been released from detention on Ellis Island and traveled on to their new homes, never knowing where their children or family members were buried.
		Both islands are located east of Staten Island and south of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge in the outer harbor of the port of New York.
