Swing Low, Sweet Chariot - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
"Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" is a United States spiritual folk song.
The hidden content of "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" was to encourage other slaves of the U.S. Southern states that the 'Chariot’ drivers (Underground Railroad ‘conductors’) would someday enable their safe escape to worldy freedom in the U.S. Northern states.
In 2003 the England national rugby union team returned from the 2003 World Cup triumph in Australia on a plane dubbed 'Sweet Chariot'.

Swing Low, Sweet Chariot was popular in the hymnbooks of the Southern Baptist churches of the Deep South, the religious tradition in which I was raised.
Swing Low, Sweet Chariot was a favorite spiritual of Harriet Tubman (1820 - 1913), who escaped from slavery in 1849 and is widely considered to be the most famous leader of the Underground Railroad, the Moses of those seeking freedom from slavery.
In another interpretation of Swing Low, Sweet Chariot, the lyrics are thought to be a coded reference to the southern Ohio town of Ripley, one of the earliest and busiest "stations" or "depots" of the Underground Railroad.

Schiller Institute-- Swing Low, Sweet Chariot -- Astronomy and the Negro Spiritual
Some people might have said, "Oh, yes, this is like the chariot that swung down to earth to pick up Elijah, and bring him to heaven." That's nice, but it's metaphor without flesh and bones.
You already know the answer: it has to be at dusk to give the escaping slave a good jump on his master who might not discover the escape until morning.
Then I took out my star maps and astrolabe, and, sure enough, in the Spring time, shortly after sundown, the Chariot is low on the horizon, and continues to swing up (counterclockwise) during the first part of the night, thus becoming brighter and brighter, and more helpful.

In a second the chariot had "swung low" and caught the faithful prophet away to Heaven.
The old time colored folk who sang, "swing low sweet chariot, coming for to carry me home," had more good Bible theology than we give them credit for having.
I long to see the chariot "of fire and the horsemen thereof." Surely, one day we shall drop this robe of flesh and rise to seize the everlasting prize.

I saw that lost gone look on their faces when they told me the government didn't follow the plan of FDR and so our land is still a dustbowl hit by dust storms and the dust storms are getting higher and wilder and meaner, and the hearts of the people are getting sickly worried.
In the case of “Swing Low” however, some folklorists suggest that slaves originally sung, “Swing Low, Sweet Harriet,” as a literal plea for Harriet Tubman to swing into the deep South and lead them to freedom.
The “chariot” in the song may have been inserted to mask the reference to Tubman, one of the most successful “conductors” on the Underground Railroad.

There is one thing, though, which makes for an uneven listen overall, and that is that many tracks begin after the song has already been started, so we suddenly jump into action (the opening track, for example, on which that adds to the surprise of the group’s sound).
The album’s closing track, “Swing Low Sweet Chariot,” made me do a true double-take and wonder what went wrong with the recording equipment while they were in the studio for this album: everything seems to have been slowed down by about a third.
But that’s really how they were playing it, and it is AMAZING to hear: the song becomes a dirge, almost, and the strange shifting harmonies they’ve used throughout the album as grace notes at higher speeds become here more bizarre as separate voices.

 Sermon: Swing Low, Sweet Chariot!
We turn now to a Negro spiritual - "Swing Low Sweet Chariot" (sung by Murray) "Swing low, sweet chariot, coming for to carry me home; swing low, sweet chariot coming for to carry me home."
Many of the fl writers tell us that there is many a hidden thought behind many of the Negro spirituals.
For instance, in ones like "Good News, The Chariot's Coming" it is just a cryptic way of alerting others that the Underground Railroad is about to come through and to spirit some of them up North back to freedom and away from enforced servitude.
