  Mercedes-Benz Ponton Swing Axle
The new design included a single pivot point at the rear axle, near the centerline of the car such that the right and left axle shafts could move independently based on the type of road surface that was encountered, thus providing independent shock absorption and improved ride characteristics.
At the time it was introduced, the single swing axle was sufficient for the under powered vehicles they were used on.
The pivot point was lowered, and later, a horizontal compensating spring was fitted between the rear axle and the right axle shaft to keep the car more stable under various driving conditions.

Swing axle - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Swing axles have universal joints connecting the driveshafts to the differential, which is attached to the chassis.
Swing axle suspensions traditionally used leaf springs and shock absorbers.
Swing axles were supplanted by deDion axles in the late 1960s, though live axles remained the most common.

my previous off road experience with a swing axle based car was with one that only had front breaks.
the swing axle really does ok. it’s simple, durable, light weight and with a 65 or older bug, you get the king pin front end which is far more durable than the ball joint front end.
i find that a swing axle is more challenging to drive fast off road than an irs car.

Now the axles can be pulled back and the cables will pull out of their sheaths slightly as they follow the axle.
The axle end of the spring plate should now be a little closer to the ground (which of course raises the car on it's wheels).
The axles should be close to parallel viewed from behind - perhaps just a slight wheel-end-down angle (slight positive camber), with the running boards parallel to the ground (assuming that the front suspension has not been altered).

If I can explain, swing axle has an axle tube with a live axle inside, and pivots from the diff centre and is supported at the wheel end with bearings.
Swing axle though great in standard form, are not a good set up for lowering.
The other draw back with swing axle, whether in standard form or a swing axle conversion, is the tuck under that the swing axle creates/suffers.

The driven sprocket of the'188 patent is coupled to the solid rear axle by a chain for driving the rear wheels such that the front body of the tricycle may roll slightly relative to a rear body of the tricycle.
The swing arm and/or the axle carrier may include a peripheral opening on a peripheral surface to allow at least a segment of the flexible coupling, between the driven sprocket and said drive sprocket, to be outside of the swing arm and/or the axle carrier.
Because the swing arm 12 of the present embodiment is substantially tubular in shape, the axle carrier 16 of the present embodiment is also substantially tubular in shape and is dimensioned to be rotatably mounted to the tubular swing arm 12.

To move forward, the swing rotates uninhibited until it is at its highest point forward and starts to swing backwards.
They might be able to get a little bit of swinging action simply due to frictional rolling resistance, which they can use to their advantage with a racheting clutch system, but it won't be much.

It is important when ordering a Knock Down chassis kit for swing axle that you know the year, because you would order for IRS if using a '68 swing axle torsion.

The swing axle is a simple design with fewer parts and more camber change.

 Whip Catch Diabolo Tricks
As the diabolo comes down towards the ground and you catch the diabolo using the whip motion, one side of the loop has to hit the axle, and the other has to miss and go past one of the two bowls.
One way to ensure a catch is to strike the axle area with your left stick's end in your swing.
This is where you swing down and out to the left to snag the diabolo.

Suspension Design: Types of Suspensions   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-28)
One of these attempts came to be known as a swing axle suspension.
It is, as the name suggests, set up so that the axles pivot about a location somewhere near the center of the car and allow the wheels to travel up and down through their respective arcs.
This is because the upper arm swings through a shorter arc than the lower and pulls in the top of the tire as the wheel travels upwards.

If this alignment cannot be achieved, then assuming you have previously aligned the wheels as in Part 1, the logical conclusion is that the rear axle adjustment which yields proper sprocket alignment is not the same as the rear axle adjustment which yields true wheel alignment.
The most common way for the swing arm to be bent is a twist in the cross tube - imagine standing behind the bike, taking hold of the swing arm legs and pushing one down and the other up.
It is not generally required that this plane intersect the swing arm axle in the center of the axle, 1/2 way between the frame spars.

Original Triumph Spitfire -- Camber Compensator
This single leaf spring, bolted to each axle's vertical link at the radius arm mount and fastened by a single bolt to a mount on the bottom of the differential, was an easy, bolt-on modification that greatly reduced the tendency of the rear wheels to tuck under.
For the 1971 Spitfire Mk.IV, Triumph redesigned that transverse swing and mount so that all but the main leaf would rock or "swing" rather than being solidly clamped to the top of the differential.
This lowered the effective roll center and greatly reduced not only the roll stiffness in the rear but also the amount of camber change during cornering.* This reduced roll stiffness, and the potential of increased oversteer that would result otherwise, was tamed by increasing the diameter of the front anti-sway bar.

Current plan is to use the axle shafts, differential, bearings, etc, of a swing-axle VW IRS system, mounted in a custom solid axle housing instead of in the original IRS transaxle/suspension with gearbox.
You have to be kind of careful with true swing axles though, the outer wheel in a turn tends to turn under.
The swing axle system is on a '64 Bug chassis (an ex-Baja 1000 vehicle) which I bought for an abortive (and IRS) steam car attempt in the late 1980s.
