Swing bowling - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Swing bowling is generally classed as a subtype of fast bowling.
The swing of a cricket ball is parallel to the axis of its rotation.
Reverse swing is difficult to achieve consistently, as it relies on uneven wear of the ball, tends to occur mostly in hot, dry weather conditions, and requires bowling at high speed.

The Science of Swing   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
Swing is generated when bowlers, by accident or design, disrupt the flow of air over one side of the ball.
swing is acheived by keeping one side of the ball polished smooth and shiny, and delivering the ball with the polished side forward, and the seam angled in the direction of desired swing.
Normal swing is achieved by maintaining laminar boundary layer air-flow on the shiny side whilst creating turbulent flow on the seam side.

 BOWLING
The ideal action for bowling the outswinger is the classical sideways-on action where the right foot lands parallel to the bowling crease, the shoulders turn towards the on side and the front foot is placed slightly across the line of direction, i.e.
As the shiny side of the ball is held on the opposite side to the direction of swing, the shiny side is on the left-hand side as the bowler views it.
It is easier to bowl the inswinger from wide of the crease but this rather signals the intention to the batsman, and it also creates a sharp angle of approach to, the wicket which may persuade the umpire to give the batsman the benefit of the doubt in marginal lbw decisions.

BBC SPORT | Cricket | England | What is reverse swing?
Swing is all about aerodynamics, more of which is explained in the next section.
In simple terms, the aerodynamics of bowling means the shiny side travels faster through the air, while the rough side acts as a brake, pushing the ball in that direction.
The straighter the seam when the ball is delivered, the greater the chance of swing, especially when the ball is older with one shiny and one rough side.

It is impossible to trace the precise discovery and development of swing.
With underarm bowling it could not have been of any consequence and we may safely say that it played no part in cricket before the legalisation of overarm bowling in 1864.

Specifically, it relates to those elements of the bowling technique which contribute towards a fast ball release, the aerodynamics and technique of swing bowling, and the association between fast bowling and lower back injury.
With regard to bowling technique, no firm conclusions are drawn on the relationships between elements of the fast bowling technique and ball release speed.
Systematic research to establish the essential aspects of the bowling technique which contribute to successful swing bowling is recommended, along with studies of the behaviour of the ball in games to ascertain the effects of ball asymmetries on ball swing.
