 Swingfire - Archived 9/2000
Swingfire may have been used by the Sudanese army against the rebels located in the southern part of the country.
In tests, two Swingfire missiles were fired in rapid succession against two separate targets from an FV432 armored personnel vehicle and were simultaneously, automatically and independently guided to hits on each.
In late 1984, development was completed of a new version of the Swingfire system with a significantly smaller and lighter guidance and control unit as well as a lighter launcher.

The Swingfire is the anti-tank missile system used by the Striker ATGW (anti-tank guided weapon) vehicle in service with the British Army.
The Trigat is currently under development with several European countries, notably the UK and Germany, and is expected to cost something in the region of £25, 000 per missile by the time it enters service.
BAE Systems also sold Swingfire to the Egyptian armed forces, and the missile is also in use with other nations in the Middle East.

 Lurker Anti-tank missiles
Systems such as the British Swingfire could be used with the launcher fully concealed from the target's view.
Successful use of a system that used Separation depended upon a property known as “gathering”, which was the process of bringing the missile into the operator's line of sight so that he could see it and then maneuver it to intercept the target.
The job of the ATGW operator got simpler with the adoption of TCA/ SACLOS Guidance but launchers also got more complex and the operator had to be at the firing position.

 Starting a Swingfire heater
Insert Swingfire into heat exchanger and set hand pump lever in a vertical position.
The heater works properly if the sound of pulsations is regular and strong meaning that the right amount of air coming in through the diapragm valve is mixed with the right amount of fuel.
If heaters are used to heat closed rooms from the outside (tents, truck cabins, or the like) the exhaust fumes must be moved a minimum of 7 feet into the air by an air tight pipe.

According to Jane's, the defence bible, BAE withdrew from the company in 1992 when the post-Gulf war British government discovered that ABD was helping Saddam Hussein with his Scud missile programme.
Among the items were a "glossy brochure for Arab British Dynamics extolling the benefits of the company's Swingfire guided missile" and an operating manual for the system.
The government's Export Control Act does not cover the issue of licensed production of arms; so as long as nothing actually leaves the UK, British companies can export their technology and create foreign-based companies to avoid any UK or EU rules governing arms exports.

Chris brought up in the past the fact that Swingfire was originally manually flown (maclos?) before being upgraded to a system similar to the Tow system to make it easier to use (saclos?) Damned If I can recall all the details on that now.
As far as I know swingfire was never issued to Inf Bn, but I was not mech for most of the 80s so could be wrong.
My understanding is that a few (60?) Strikers had their Swingfire system modified to ACLOS - the thermal sight would literally automatically track the target which is very advanced/unusual for a ground vehicle weapon system (or was at the time!).

It turns out that the Ministry of Defence has more Swingfire missiles than it knows what to do with, and is disposing of them.
Apparently what the Ministry of Defence (or, rather, their contractor QinetiQ, who used to be DERA) actually do is to take their spare missiles down to the beach, wait for the tide to come in, and then blow them up.
Which seems plausible: the Swingfire has a diameter of 17cm, and unless Mr.
