Although cymbals are not often required they form part of every orchestra; their chief use is for marking the rhythm and for producing weird, fantastic effects or adding military colour, and their shrill notes hold their own against a full orchestra playing fortissimo.
Furthermore, the edge of a suspended cymbal may be hit with shoulder of a drum stick to obtain a sound somewhat akin to that of a pair of clash cymbals.
During the middle ages the word cymbal was applied to the glockenspiel, or peal of small bells, and later to the dulcimer, perhaps on account of the clear bell-like tone produced by the hammers striking the wire strings.

Swish cymbal - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The swish cymbal and the pang cymbal are exotic ride cymbals originally developed as part of the collaboration between Gene Krupa and the Avedis Zildjian Company.
Both the swish and the pang have an upturned rim and are most often but not always mounted bell down, and in this and their tone are similar to a china cymbal.
The swish has a higher tone than the pang and is washier with a less pronounced ping, and this difference was accentuated as the swish was originally sold with rivets already installed (see sizzle cymbal) while the pang was sold without rivets.

Read about Hi-hat at WorldVillage Encyclopedia. Research Hi-hat and learn about Hi-hat here!   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
It consists of two cymbals mounted on a metal stand, with a pedal-and-spring mechanism designed such that the cymbals can either be brought together by pressing the pedal, or raised to a predetermined (but adjustable before playing) distance by releasing the pedal.
To produce this the cymbals are stuck twice in rapid succession, being held closed on the first stroke and allowed to open just before the second, then allowed to ring before being closed with a "chick" to complete the pattern (the cymbals may or not be struck on the "chick").
Modern hi-hat cymbals are much heavier than modern crash cymbals, reflecting a continual trend to lighter and thinner crash cymbals as well as to heavier hi-hats.

Sizzle cymbal   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
The most common form of sizzle cymbal used in a drum kit is a large ride cymbal with a number of rivets loosely fitted but captive in holes spaced evenly around the cymbal close to the rim.
Swish and to a lesser extent pang cymbals with rivets installed in this way were heavily used as main ride cymbals in the swing band era.
A swish cymbal with rivets is the main ride cymbal of choice for some leading jazz and fusion drummers.

CYMBAL FACTS AND INFORMATION   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
Cymbals consist of thin, normally round plates of various cymbal_alloys; see cymbal_making for a discussion of their manufacture.
Orchestral crash_cymbals are traditionally used in pairs, each one having a strap set in the bell of the cymbal by which they are held.
However, hi-hat cymbals tend to be heavy with little taper, more similar to a ride_cymbal than to a crash_cymbal as found in a drum kit, and perform a ride rather than a crash function.

 Sizzle Cymbals
Sizzle cymbal is a cymbal to which rivets, chains or other rattles have been added to modify the sound.
Some cymbal makers claim that if the rivets are removed from a sizzle cymbal its previous tone will be restored, despite the fact that this leaves small holes in the cymbal.
Whether this is entirely true is controversial, with a result that the value of a cymbal is generally reduced by rivet holes.

His drum method was published in 1938 and immediately became the standard text.
His influence eventually standardised the combination of 8x12" and 9x13" hanging toms mounted on the bass drum, and he developed and popularised many of the cymbal techniques that became standards.
His collaboration with Armand Zildjian of the Avedis Zildjian Company developed the hi-hat stand and standardised the names and uses of the ride cymbal, the crash cymbal, the splash cymbal, the pang cymbal and the swish cymbal.

I'd say that the crash cymbals (and even the hats) appear to 'move' as they decay....most noticeably the crash in the middle, which has the biggest stereo shift, right across the field right-middle to left.
My gut reaction is still that phasey-cymbals are not 'natural'......my first early recordings suffered badly from phasey cymbals and since I always aimed to sound as good as ringos drums (whos cymbals never did that), I strove to overcome it as a fault, and did, for better or worse.....
I would have thought that overheads would have more of a problem as the cymbal would be moving closer and further from the mic as it rings, but maybe the effect is minimal after a certain distance.

I saw you live with Diana Krall in Regina, SK in May (btw, phenomenal perfomance), and it seemed like you were able to get much more variety of sound from that cymbal, even at low volumes.
Then, concentrate on the different areas of the cymbal, i.e., WHERE you are playing it...
having said all of that, I have come across the occasional Swish that is extremely dry (short sustain), and these cymbals are a bit more tricky to work with at lower volumes, especially if you're looking for that sweet and long kind of dark sizzle sustain...

I noticed on Relish that some of the cymbals were going a strange phasy, washy thing that I thought was maybe an unlinked (duel mono) compressor that was pumping against each channel because the attack or release times were off.
Anyway the moving cymbals might be causing the issue but I don't think that is what I am hearing, or not the complete cause.
The cymbals seem to be moving around in the stereo image and I am not a fan of that.

I have several things I'm trying to sequence and while I'd LOVE to use a nice soft mallet cymbal swish, all I have ever been able to get is (the same) thing I get with Tympani rolls - TOO perfect and TOO staccato to sound legit.
I even tried (and came real close but no cigar) using a REVERSE cymbal patch but still couldn't avoid the tap-tap-tap etc. of the stick on the cymbal.
However, your solution (to kill the initial attack on the cymbal hit) is probably the most practical one.
