DVD Review - Swiss Family Robinson   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
Part of the first batch of four "Vault Disney" titles, 1960’s "Swiss Family Robinson" is an entertaining adaptation of Johann Wyss’s novel about a family on their way to build a new life in New Guinea who instead wind up building their very own paradise on an uninhabited South Pacific island.
The Robinson boys are a bit miffed at the effeminate nature of young Bertie until they discover that the "boy" is actually a girl named Roberta (Janet Munro) who was disguised by her grandfather so the pirates wouldn’t take any, ahem, liberties with her.
"Swiss Family Robinson" is a wonderful adventure tale that may seem a bit dated and stilted to modern-day audiences but those who grew up watching the classic live-action Disney films or those who just enjoy quality family entertainment are in for a real treat with this new "Vault Disney" DVD.

Le Robinson Suisse and Swiss Family Robinson
Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe carved a literary niche for the survival story, and The Swiss Family Robinson is one of the many stories carved in that mould.
Written from the perspective of the father, it chronicles the first-hand account of the shipwreck and survival of a Swiss family of six on a remote island somewhere near New Guinea.
The family consists of a Swiss pastor who is a walking encyclopedia on agricultural practices from around the world; his wife who excels in equal measure with culinary skills, and four energetic sons.

The Robinsons have left Bern to forge a new life in New Guinea, when their ship is attacked by pirates.
The ship then wrecks on rocks not far from an uninhabited island, and the Robinsons raft to the island, salvaging all of the goods and livestock that were on board, including the ship’s pipe organ.

The Swiss Family Robinson - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Swiss Family Robinson (Der Schweizerische Robinson) is a novel, first published in 1812, about a Swiss family who is shipwrecked in the East Indies en route to Port Jackson, Australia.
Written by Swiss pastor Johann David Wyss, and edited by his son Johann Rudolf Wyss, this novel was intended to teach his four sons about family values, good husbandry, the uses of the natural world and self-reliance.
Although movie and TV adaptations have often given them the surname Robinson, which is not a Swiss name, the "Robinson" of the title refers to Robinson Crusoe.

Johann Wyss’ Swiss Family Robinson still find a way to be politically incorrect as they capture many of the island’s menagerie and use them for slave labour before racing them comically on their day off.
When the storm abates, the Robinsons are spared, but of the crew there is no sign and so they take their stuff across to a nearby island and set up shop.

Disney's Swiss Family Robinson is the rollicking tale of the Robinson family's courageous adventures on a deserted island.
Swiss Family Robinson is a movie that stretches the limits of believability, but it does so in such a fun and entertaining way that half way through the film you don't really care that none of the Robinsons' inventions are very practical.

Nestling in the branches of a Banyan tree, the Swiss Family Treehouse almost fills the entire tree.
Because of the weight of the walkways, and the number of people visiting the attraction, Disney had a (larger than life) complete tree made out of steel and concrete to provide the attraction support structure, for what would probably be most peoples idea of an ideal tree-house (assuming one exists).
The ideas behind the tree and treehouse are derived from the Disney film "Swiss Family Robinson" which was released in 1960, though of course as with everything at Walt Disney World, the imagineers have added more than a handfull of their own ideas, mixed in with just a hint of pixie dust.

This family doesn't seem very Swiss to me, and I don't think there are elephants and tigers on remote islands in the South Seas, but while Walt Disney's early Survivor experience lacks in realism, it's also not nearly as wholesome as it pretends to be.
