Swiss Federal Council information - Search.com
The Federal Council was instituted by the 1848 Federal Constitution as the "supreme executive and directorial authority of the Confederation".
The Federal Council thus represents one of the longest traditions of continuous democratic government in the world, comparable to that of the offices of the U.S. President or the British Prime Minister.
The members of the Federal Council are elected for a term of four years by both chambers of the federal parliament sitting together as the Federal Assembly.

The Swiss Federal Council (Schweizerischer Bundesrat, Conseil fédéral suisse, Consiglio federale svizzero, Cussegl federal svizzer) is the seven-member executive council which constitutes the government as well as the head of state of Switzerland.
In urgent situations where a Council decision cannot be made in time, he or she is empowered to act on behalf of the whole Council.
Currently (as of 2006), the Council is considered to have a conservative and liberal (in the classical sense) majority, composed of Pascal Couchepin / Hans-Rudolf Merz (FDP) and Christoph Blocher / Samuel Schmid (SVP).

Swiss Federal Council - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Swiss Federal Council (in German, Schweizerische Bundesrat; in French, Conseil fédéral suisse; in Italian, Consiglio federale svizzero; in Romansh, Cussegl federal svizzer) is the seven-member executive council which constitutes the government of Switzerland, as well as assuming functions corresponding to those of the head of state of other nations.
The president of the confederation is thus not in the position of a head of state, though he or she may act and be recognized as one welcoming visiting heads of state of foreign nations.
Due to the Federal Council's unique nature as a voluntary grand coalition of political opponents, its operation is subject to numerous constitutional conventions.

Swiss trade with the Nazis as well as with the Allies "was a question of national, political and economic survival," the Cabinet maintained.
The government conceded that the "Swiss business community had also pursued its own interests with the Axis and the Allies." This was viewed by some observers as a first step by the government to distance itself from questionable wartime activities pursued by private Swiss banks and industry.
The federation was particularly pleased that the government admitted the "inexcusable immigration policy toward the Jews" during the war, said Thomas Lyssy, the federation's vice president.

The New Swiss Constitution and Reform of the Federal Judiciary
The Swiss federal government (the Swiss Confederation) consists of three branches — the Federal Assembly, a bicameral parliament; the Federal Council, an executive body of seven ministers elected by the Federal Assembly; and the Federal Tribunal, whose 30 judges and 15 substitute judges are elected by the Federal Assembly.
Already in the 1970s, the Federal Council created an expert commission to draft a new constitution, since it was widely recognized that reform of the constitutional system was necessary in order to maintain the efficient functioning of the federal government.
Finally, it should be noted that the federal legislature did not pass the Federal Council's proposal to extend the scope of the Tribunal's judicial review to include federal statutory law enacted by the Swiss parliament.

In their objection of 4 March 1991, to which several expert opinions were attached, the applicants requested the Federal Council to refuse an extension of the operating licence and to order the immediate and permanent closure of the nuclear power station.
