Legislative elections in the Swiss Confederation were held on 19 October 2003.
In the aftermath of the elections Ruth Metzler-Arnold, one of the two Christian Democrats in the Federal Council was replaced by Christoph Blocher, the most influential politician in the Swiss People's Party.
These elections were to the National Council and for most of the members of the Council of States.

The largely ceremonial President of the Swiss Confederation and Vice-President are elected by the Federal Assembly from among the members of the Federal Council for one-year terms that run concurrently.
From 1959 to 2003 the Federal Council was composed of a coalition of all major parties in the same ratio: 2 Free Democratic Party, 2 Social Democratic, 2 Christian Democratic, and 1 Swiss People's Party.
In the elections of 2003 the People's Party (formerly the smallest of the 4 parties represented in the Federal Council) gained a plurality of seats in the National Council and received (effective January 1, 2004) a second seat in the Federal Council, reducing the share of the Christian Democratic party to 1 seat.

Today was a big election day in Switzerland - voting for members of the National Rat (sort of the equivalent of the Congress in the U.S.) and the Stände Rat (sort of equivalent to the Senate) for the federal parliament.
What makes the Swiss election process so fascinating for an auslander is this: there were about 1,300 candidates on 32 ballot sheets - one for each party, plus a blank shee to put together your own list of candidates (from the previous lists - not write-in candidates).
A slew of candidates participated in the recall elections, and while most of them were sort of shuffled off as fringe kooks, it at least gave a glimmer of hope to a courageous few that they too, could actually participate in the process.
