 Baseball Toaster : Mike's Baseball Rants : May 2004
—Odd ad campaign for the film Switch, in which Jimmy Smits name was blurted at the end of the trailer after the film's name for some odd reason.
Then there was the brief period in the '80s, in which child/teenage TV stars were given film projects based on the same premise (Witness Fred Savage in Visa Versa and Kirk Cameron in Like Father Like Son).
Maybe the change of scene, being able to spend time with his family, reassessing his priorities, his offseason regimen, the fact that he pitched only 160 innings last year, etc. were all a part of it.

The Critical Eye Kodak FD 300 Film Drive
The Film Drive is also one of those consumer-oriented PC gadgets that has no off switch, which is an increasing source of irritation for me. Including the Film Drive, I had four peripherals on my desk which are used for maybe 15 minutes day, and yet are always on, even if the computer is off.
While the Film Drive is not the most flexible film scanner on the market--unlike other film scanners, it scans APS film exclusively--it's the smallest and cheapest I've seen to date.
True to its hype, the Film Drive is as easy to load as an APS camera: pop open the door, slide in a processed or partially-processed film cartridge, and close the door.

 USATODAY.com - Kodak gives film cameras heave-ho
If consumers already own the APS cameras, Kodak's switch means it could be harder to find APS film if stores don't carry it because they don't carry the cameras.
Longtime film leader Kodak has struggled with the switch.
The Photo Marketing Association says APS cameras had an estimated 12.1% of the film camera market in 2003, down from 14.1% the prior year.

EI > Reviews > Someone Like You (2001)
Ashley Judd was beautiful and seems to be capable of making a switch to a new kind of film; it was unfortunate that the switch had to be with something so typical.
The film doesn't deserve to be completely ripped apart, though, because it was very cute -- and I do mean cute in the most girlish way possible.
Someone Like You is a chick flick in every sense of the phrase, and throughout the movie's 100-minute running time I waited and waited for something even remotely unexpected to happen -- but it never did.

MEMS switches can be mass-produced at relatively low cost, but their attractiveness has been diminished by the fact that, heretofore, MEMS switches have usually been found to exhibit high insertion losses.

Tim Burton's 'Vincent'--A Matter of Pastiche
In this instance the film match cuts from a shot of Vincent, touching a light switch, to a dark, dungeon-like space where "Vincent-as-Price-as-Mad-Scientist" stands in a gothic pool of light clutching a pull chain for an overhead light.
The film is also an early stylistic benchmark for Burton, whose collaboration with Heinrichs established a pattern of combining 2D and 3D animation within a single film.
The film is a tongue-in-cheek melodrama, a cartoonish pastiche of B-horror movie motifs and Vincent's angst, his exaggerated movements and chiseled facial expressions played against the mellifluous voice of Vincent Price, dripping with mock tragedy.

 Film Reviews - Cliffhanger
Anyway, as a film, Cliffhanger actually is an all-action special effects and stupendous scenery movie, with Sly being allowed to flex his muscles and do his best you-killed-my-buddy-and-now-you're- gonna-damn-well-pay act, all the time suspended on a frayed bit of rope suspended 17 million feet above the ground.
Switch your brain off, open your eyes and kick back and enjoy this, the sort of movie at which you will end up cheering the good guys, then realise how sad you're being and be thankful you're watching it at home.
Cliffhanger may claim to be an all-action special effects and stupendous scenery movie, but for me the highlight was seeing Pa Walton as a helicopter pilot.
