Wendy Carlos - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Switched-On Bach was perhaps the first album to attempt the use of synthesizers as an alternative to an orchestra.
On its release, Switched-On Bach became the best-selling classical album of all time, and the first to go platinum.
Some of her end title music was replaced with a song by the rock group, Journey, and the music that originally was composed for the lightcycle scene was dropped.

 No. 1929: Switched on Bach
Switched-On Bach is still in music stores today -- still serving as a delightful introduction to electronic music, not to mention a reminder that the music of Bach transcends not only time, but instrumentation.
Switched-On Bach became essential listening for anyone versed in electronic music.
Released in 1968, Switched-On Bach brought Bach to life on a Moog synthesizer.

 James Wierzbicki / Wendy Carlos
As noted, the original ''Switched-On Bach'' was made in a studio, and the material was never intended for presentation in a concert hall.
Working with a pair of monophonic synthesizers, Carlos would have been able to perform in public any of the three two-part inventions featured on ''Switched-On Bach.'' The performances would have had to be duller than on the recording, though, for with his fingers playing the notes he could not have manipulated the synthesizers' tone controllers.
If Carlos subsequently gave a ''Switched-On Bach'' concert anywhere else in the world, it is not mentioned in any of the articles and interviews that make up the extensive Carlos literature.

Well, anyone who knows how hard Carlos and producer Elkind worked to coax the sounds for Switched-On Bach out of "Robot" Moog's infernal device, and how meticulous and exacting Carlos was in the performance, will certainly agree with me that the liner notes to Switched-Off Bach were written by an ignorant, mean-spirited musical Ludddite.
In 1968 Walter Carlos released Switched-On Bach, a record truly unique for its time.
For details about the actual production of Switched-On Bach, I highly recommend the magnificently annotated Switched-On Boxed Set recently released on CD on the East Side Digital label.

Switched-On Bach II has the Badinerie, Minuet, and Bourrée from Bach's orchestral suite in B minor, the Inventions in A and A minor, 'Sheep May Safely Graze,' four little pieces from Anna Magdalena's Notebook (including a heart-rending 'Bist du bei mir'), and Brandenburg 5.
Switched-On Bach was one of the first classical albums I ever heard, and I heard it long before I had heard Bach on conventional (let alone period) instruments.
Switched on Bach II and the Switched On Brandenbergs are less satisfying for me after hearing W-TS, but interesting none the less.

Whether you remember the oscillating fugues the first time around or are a latecomer in search of the ultimate Carlos primer, Switched-On Boxed Set (East Side Digital/Outside) should supply all the music and answers about the enigmatic musician you need.
The last commercially successful film score she composed may have been 1982's Tron, but she's also scored several that never made it to theatres, including Roberta Hanley's Woundings.
