Switched-mode power supply - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This means that basic switched mode power supplies tend to produce more harmonics in the mains power line and have a worse power factor than other types of appliances.
A switched-mode power supply, switch mode power supply, or SMPS, is an electronic power supply unit (PSU) that incorporates a switching regulator — an internal control circuit that switches the load current rapidly on and off in order to stabilise the output voltage.
Linear power supplies regulate their output by using a higher voltage in the initial stages and then expending some of it as heat to improve the power quality.

Power supply - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Constraints that commonly affect power supplies are the amount of power they can supply, how long they can supply it for without needing some kind of refueling or recharging, how stable their output voltage or current is under varying load conditions, and whether they provide continuous power or pulses.
A power supply unit (sometimes abbreviated power supply or PSU) is a device or system that supplies electrical or other types of energy to an output load or group of loads.
The power supply is a small box inside the computer; it is an important part of a computer because it provides power in a form that is suitable for every other component inside or attached to the computer in order for it to work.

 Switched Mode Power Supplies:ECN Asia
Switched mode power supplies were first use during the time when valve or tube car radios needed the large HT supply to be generated from an automobile power system of nominally 12V DC.
While more reliable, efficient and durable than those of the past, today’s switched mode power supply is basically the sames with the exception of the replacement with solid state electronics of the electro-mechanical component that ‘broke down’ the 12V DC supply.
Inside the unit are discrete components mounted on a metal-frame circuit board that enables the 30W model to provide a higher power density per cm3 than similar power supplies.

Switched-mode power supplies are frequently used for devices which have a normal relatively high power mode and a low-power mode, such as television sets or computer monitors, for example, having a standby mode.
The switched-mode power supply of the invention operates on the series resonant converter principle and it comprises a first capacitor on the primary side to which both a voltage modulated at the mains frequency and a voltage modulated at the switching frequency of the switched-mode power supply are applied.
Switched-mode power supply according to Claim 9, characterized in that a coil (L31) which influences the frequency and two capacitors (C18, C19) which are connected as a voltage divider and influence the frequency are arranged in the series resonant circuit.

History of Switched Mode Power Supplies
The ascendency of switched-mode power supplies is directly linked to the development of fast high voltage switching power transistors in 1967 (49) and, to a lesser extent, on developments in ceramic ferrite materials and capacitor technology.
The switched-mode power supply market is now well established within the electronics sector (43, 44), with a large number of power supply manufacturers world-wide providing a wide range of units for the commercial and military markets.
Power supplies working from the mains for the commercial market were still largely linear forms, with isolation, a necessary requirement for safety, being achieved by using a bulky mains frequency transformer.

 Articles - Inductor
As inductors tend to be larger and heavier than other components, their use has been reduced in modern equipment; solid state switching power supplies eliminate large transformers, for instance, and circuits are designed to use only small inductors, if any; larger values are simulated by use of gyrator circuits.
An inductor is used as the energy storage device in a switched-mode power supply.
The inductor is energized for a specific fraction of the regulator´s switching frequency, and de-energized for the remainder of the cycle.

Power conversion ICs, like the one used here, reduce parts count through the integration of a high-voltage MOSFET and low-voltage control circuitry on a single chip.
In effect, skipping cycles reduces the effective switching frequency as a load's current demand drops, thus further reducing no-load power consumption and increasing efficiency.

I need to make two switched mode power supplies with proper bypassing for rf-range the supply should work at 3.3 V with a power of 2.5 W, the design should be as small as possible can anyone supply me with resources
Another idea, you can use low voltage logic inverters the work from 3.3 volt and use as many gates as you want to make the switching power supply to obtain 2.5 watt.
If you're concerned about noise but want efficiency then you can use a switching power supply to step down to about 5V then use a LDO linear power supply to step down to 3.3V.

Power supplies in today's computers are known as SWITCHMODE or Switching Mode power supplies and require a load to continue to operate after being switched on (the term switching mode actually applies to the technique of A/C to D/C conversion and not to the power up action).
These power supplies are called SWITCHMODE or SWITCHING MODE power supplies and must have a load to function -- hence the 10 ohm 10 watt load resistor on the 5 volt line.
Many of the R/C folks are converting power supplies for the purpose of driving field chargers and are finding that voltage levels below 12 volts are sometimes insufficient to power their chargers.
