Sword and sandal - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sword and sandal films (or "peplums") are a cinematic genre of adventure or fantasy films that have subjects set in Biblical or classical antiquity, often with contrived plots based very loosely on mythology or history.
Most movies based on Greco-Roman history and mythology, or the surrounding cultures of the same era (Egyptians, Assyrians, Etruscans, Minoans), etc. are sword and sandal epic films.
More specifically, however, the "sword and sandal" film genre usually refers to a low-budget Italian movie on a gladiatorial, Biblical or mythological subject, often with a professional body-builder in the principal role; the genre occupied much of the popular segment of Italy's movie industry from 1960-1964, before the invention of the spaghetti western.

Scifilm -- Musings, HERCULES UNCHAINED (1959)
I have to admit that this is one of my favorite sword and sandal movies; like its predecessor (HERCULES), it begins with a specific story in Greek mythology; in this case the Seven Against Thebes legend about the struggle between Eteocles and Polynieces for the kingdom of Thebes.
Then, about thirty minutes into the movie, it takes a turn into typical sword and sandal territory; namely, Hercules is seduced by an evil queen.
Plus, Hercules gets to wrestle with Antaeus (Primo Carnera) at one point, gets to throw a big table at a bunch of hapless guards, fights a tiger, and bends some bars (underwater this time; is their no limit to this man's talents?).

The advent of the sword and sandal genre allowed cinemagoers to experience vicariously the thrills of the gladiatorial arena, chariot racing in the circus, or an upper-class orgy at a Roman Senator's country villa--so long as such illicit pleasures were glossed with a veneer of pious Christianity, of course.
Encouraged by this success, Hollywood embarked on an orgy of sword and sandal extravaganzas which defined the term "epic" for moviegoers ever after.
Prophetically, The Fall of the Roman Empire sounded the death knell for the sword and sandal epic: not only were they unfeasibly expensive to make, audiences were growing a little tired of sword fights and chariot races accompanied by resplendent brass fanfares.
