Sword and sorcery - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sword and sorcery (SandS) is a fantasy sub-genre featuring swashbuckling heroes in violent conflict with a variety of villains, chiefly wizards, witches, evil spirits, and other supernatural creatures.
Magazines such as Black Gate and Flashing Swords have recently attempted to revive the genre to the state that it enjoyed during the pulp era of the twenties and thirties.

Sword Of Sorcery #1 gives us an adaptation of Leiber's "The Price Of Pain Ease." This exciting story introduces us to our two main characters, Fafhrd The Barbarian & The Gray Mouser, and involves them in taking refuge from a brawl in a seemingly vacated luxurious palace.
Sword Of Sorcery #3 is titled "Betrayal." No credits are given, but we learn in a later issue it's O'Neil & Chaykin again.
Sword Of Sorcery #5 credits Denny O'Neil and Fritz Leiber for the first story "The Sunken Land." The truly inspired art is by Walt Simonson and Al Milgron.

This subgenre is distinguished from its close cousins, the space opera and the sword and sorcery fantasy, by its setting (an exotic, technologically primitive planet), although it shares with them the adventure-plot conventions of chases, escapes, and quests.
Sword and sorcery attempts to combine the vigor of the slam-bang adventure story with the heroic grandeur of the old epics: Beowulf, The Song of Roland, and the like.

 The Conan Forums -> Sword&sorcery/fantasy
As to the term Sword and Sorcery, it was a term coined by Fritz Leiber to fit Howard's style of fantasy.
Sword and Scorcery; For me, this is a style of fantasy that tends to focus on the individual character dealing with threats or diffaculties that arise either because of his own actions or failure to act.
Sword and Sorcery tends to be--though I suppose it doesn't have to be--more of a physical-type story, i.e., there is more hacking, bloodletting, and as far as most that I've read, the story moves along rather quickly, as opposed to a multi-book 'High Fantasy'; genre-style story.

Sword and Sorcery is more of an adventure tale than fantasy like Tolkein, Jordan, Farland and the like.
High Fantasy usually has complex worlds invented by the authors, while swords and sorcery worlds are created only as a set to the heroes and aren't really described or built in a logical way.
In High Fantasy there is a lot more politics, intrigues and armies clashing, swords and sorcery is usually about sole heroes and their swords and spells fighting hordes of monsters.

I usually associate "Sword and Planet" with Edgar Rice Burroughs (the Mars novels) and Leigh Brackett: basically, stories with an interplanetary and science fiction setting, but where characters wield archaic weapons like swords, act like they exist in a medieval fantasy setting, and where science is treated like magic.
McCullough compares sword and sorcery to heroic fantasy in a thoroughly researched and entertaining look at both fantasy genres.

So I went with the Microcabin RPG "Sword & Sorcery", which I had already played under the title "Lucienne's Quest" when Panasonic released it for the 3DO back in March of 1996.
"Sword & Sorcery" for 3DO used a third revision of that engine which gives us an all-polygon world with nice but rough-looking worlds that vary in look and texture.
If you are an RPG nut who happens to stumble upon a cheap version of "Sword & Sorcery", and aren't jaded yet by visually stunning eye-candy like "Shining of the Holy Ark" or "Rayearth", I say give it a shot if you don't mind having a game with very little or no replay value.

 swordsor.html
Sword and Sorcery, a term usually ascribed to Fritz Leiber who first used the phrase in 1960, refers to a sub-genre of fantasy which deals with the swashbuckling exploits of violent, amoral swordsmen and their (often) bloody confrontations with agents of evil in imaginary lands.
Setting his tale in an imaginary past (known as the Hyborian Age), "The Phoenix and the Sword" (Weird Tales, 1932) featured the first appearance of this violent and mighty swordsman.
The legend of Conan as well as the notions of Sword & Sorcery were greatly expanded upon in sixteen additional stories, including "The Scarlet Citadel," "The Tower of the Elephant," "Black Colossus" and "Red Nails."16

The Adventures of Conan: A Sword and Sorcery Spectacular: (Basil Poledouris) In the early 1980s, Americans were consumed by the need for adventures from the mythical age of sword and sorcery.
The most successful film of the genre is, of course, Conan the Barbarian, and not only did the film inspire a full-length motion picture sequel (the substandard Conan the Destroyer), but it also led to the creation of a live-action Conan stage show located at Universal Studios in 1983.
The show, formally titled The Adventures of Conan: A Sword and Sorcery Spectacular, ran for ten successful years before being replaced by newer, more technically sophisticated attractions such as Jurassic Park: The Ride.
