This dance seems to have had its ritual origin in the primitive expulsion of Death or Winter, the death and resurrection of Summer, or in that conflict between Winter and Summer which, on the literary side, was also the origin of many débats and estrifs.
Its chief personages are the fool, who wears the skin of a fox or some other animal, and the “Bessy,” a man dressed in woman’s clothes—figures in which folk-lore finds the survival of the ritual of agricultural worship.
Amid a bewildering variety of nomenclature and detail, the invariable incident of the death and restoration to life of one of the characters is the point upon which has been based the descent of this play from pagan festivals celebrating the death and resurrection of the year.

The reason was easily found in the monotony and ear-piercing nature of the music to which all dancing must be done.
It may be admitted that there was a peculiar rhythm to the Turkish drums, and a certain minor roulade in the pipe-tunes; but the unceasing repetition of these sounds, with the attendant misery to the hearer of an increasing tempo as the dance progressed, drove away the "Christian," and kept him at a wise distance.
In watching this saber-dance, the spectator had the feeling that the combatants were much more likely to put out his eye than to hurt each other; and, indeed, to study the faces and actions of the performers, was only to add force to this unhappy thought.

The Rapper Sword Dance - Origins and History
Later accounts in the same century describe the dance in greater detail, and although rigid swords continue to be used, some elements of the modern dance already exist, including the male and ‘female’ characters and the close association between the dance and coal mining.
As the early dances were recorded in the Tyne Valley, whereas the rapper dances were recorded in Tyneside – some 20 miles (30 km) downstream – it is quite possible that the two co-existed for part of the 19th century, the rapper dance thriving in one location while its ancestor died out in another.
The dance was already associated with coal mining communities, and the true essence of the dance cannot be appreciated without an understanding of the social context in which it developed.

Mr. Leslie's Banbury Rapper Sword Dance Team Welcome
In Britain sword dancing was quite widespread in the sixteenth century but as with so many traditional customs it went into a decline in the post Civil War period and by the eighteenth century was only found in the North East of England.
Most teams danced with long, rigid metal swords or wooden laths but during the nineteenth century a tradition of dancing with swords made of strips of flexible steel, called rappers, arose amongst the mining communities of the Northumberland and Durham coal fields.
The team dance to a lively medley of jigs played on the fiddle and weave an increasingly complex series of figures whilst all the time remaining joined together by their short flexible metal swords called ‘rappers’ or longer rigid 'long swords'.
