Swordfishtrombones - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Swordfishtrombones is an album by American singer-songwriter Tom Waits, released in September of 1983 (see 1983 in music).
Stylistically different from his previous LPs, Swordfishtrombones features reduced strings and piano, replacing them with unusal instrumentation and a somewhat more abstract songwriting approach.
Swordfishtrombones peaked at #164 on Billboard's Pop Albums and Billboard 200 albums chart.

Rain Dogs would be the apex of this era of Tom's songwriting, and his masterpiece may indeed have come in 1992 with Bone Machine, but Swordfishtrombones is a brave, admirable total re-invention the likes of which we almost never see.
Choosing to jettison his record label and produce the new album himself, he also left behind the combination of strings and piano that had backed so many of his previous songs, replacing them with scratchy electric guitars (often plucked), bizarre organs, glass harmonicas, and most of all, a huge variety of drums.
Swordfishtrombones, which was both an important career move for Waits and an album on which every song matters and is well placed, should not be missed by anyone interested in some of the best American popular music of all time.

The resulting album, "Swordfishtrombones," was the beginning of Waits' journey into wild new territory.
"Swordfishtrombones" isn't merely a departure for Waits, it's a complete reinvention of his musical language.
"Swordfishtrombones" is the most ghostly track on this release, having its melody hammered in by marimba, and a shuffle-bass feel, against which Waits confides his tale of a soldier who lost his mind following the war.

BBC - Radio 2 - Critical List - Tom Waits: Swordfishtrombones
This radical soup of deep bass, homemade percussion and Waits' gravel gargling vocals was met with puzzlement by Waits' label, Asylum, and prefigured a parting of the ways.
The songs still resonate with tales of outsiders and social misfits, but are exaggerated far beyond the Chandler-esque vignettes of yore into often surreal accounts of arsonists and lonely Australian towns.
Swordfishtrombones was never going to be massive seller, but it garnered enough critical acclaim to push it into the charts in both the US and Europe, and allowed Waits the artistic freedom to pursue his eccentric muse down even more extreme avenues, culminating in 1992's frankly terrifying Bone Machine.

Between the release of Heartattack and Vine in 1980 and Swordfishtrombones in 1983, Tom Waits got rid of his manager, his producer, and his record company.
Actually, it did make the bottom of the best-seller charts, like most of Waits' albums, and now that he was with a label based in Europe, even charted there.
Artistically, Swordfishtrombones marked an evolution of which Waits had not seemed capable (though there were hints of this sound on his last two Asylum albums), and in career terms it reinvented him.
