Patron Saints Index: Our Lady of Guadalupe
The Blessed Virgin appeared on Saturday 9 December 1531 to a 55 year old neophyte named Juan Diego, who was hurrying down Tepeyac hill to hear Mass in Mexico City.
The life size figure of the Virgin Mother, just as Juan had described her, was glowing on the tilma.
Sworn evidence was given at various commissions of inquiry corroborating the traditional account of the miraculous origin and influence of the picture.

In order to remain unmarried, however, she must become a sworn virgin and dress and act as a man. The other condition under which a woman may become a sworn virgin is if her parents deem it so due to a lack of sons.
As a man, the sworn virgin becomes the family's representative in the community.
Although some descriptions of sworn virgins refer to them as women who have had to sacrifice their gender, on the contrary, it is not a sacrifice at all, but rather an avenue of opportunity.

Medieval Sourcebook: Tales of the Virgin
Likewise the matron began urgently to implore the aid of the blessed Virgin whom, frequently, day and night, she had been accustomed to salute and before whose image she had been wont to kneel in prayer.
At length the pious Virgin, overcome by their prayers, summoned the demons who had caused the deed and enjoined upon them that, as they had caused the scandal to religion, they must bring the infamy to an end.
But when about the ninth hour, in the presence of a multitude of men, he had sworn by the tongue of the blessed Virgin, by blaspheming her he lost the use of his tongue, and by speaking basely of her, suddenly stricken in the presence of the multitude, he fell dead.

 Library Bulletin 344
No documentation as yet has been discovered to explain the origin or date of origin of the phenomenon of ‘sworn virgins’ where girls/women adopt male characteristics (as perceived by Albanians) largely by virtue of dress and behaviour and take a vow of celibacy and are accepted as men by their communities.
This background clearly establishes the history of and rationale for the existence of the ‘sworn virgins’.
Three types of ‘sworn virgins’ have been identified: those whose choice was made in childhood by parents; those whose choice came after puberty, and a rare type – the semi religious one.

I will examine the tradition of sworn virgins (virdzina, tobelije, muskobanja) who lived and live in the mountainous regions of Northern Albania and neighboring Kosovo, Serbia, and Montenegro through the literature, including Young's recent Women Who Become Men and sources from Yugoslavia.
In the West we usually think of transvestites and transgendered people as going against societal norms to perform their desired identities, but in the case of sworn virgins, it is the patriarchal society that forces the women to live as men.
Most significantly, the film breaks with the authentic sworn virgin tradition to show a heroine who expresses her inner, essential desires to live life as a woman, escaping the patriarchal oppression of life as a sworn virgin.

Although the choice to become a sworn virgin is often made by other family members for the reasons described above, sometimes a woman will become a sworn virgin because she feels more comfortable as a man. Antonia Young describes her encounter with a sworn virgin, named Lule:
At the age of nineteen, Lule decided to become a sworn virgin, even though she still had a brother who legally could inherit the family's wealth.
Thus, where no men exist in a given household, this duty falls to the sworn virgin.

A strength of Young's book is that she clearly articulates the primary motivations for becoming a sworn virgin in Albanian society.
The tradition of sworn virgins has deep roots in the cultural traditions of the clans living in Northern Albania and Kosovo.
The clan and extended family system is in full gear in the North of Albania and in neighboring Kosovo where on occasion a sworn virgin can be seen clinging on to the traditions that have engulfed this portion of the Balkans since the occupation of the Ottoman Empire and even prior to that.

Once her term of service had been completed, a virgin was free to marry or start another lifestyle, but usually they were afflicted by regret and depression for the rest of their lives and they inspired pious reverence in the others, so that they kept faithful to their virginal promise until old age and death.
If the Virgin broke the vow of chastity she was condemned to death buried alive, near what is known as the Colline Gate, where there was a small room, with an entrance from above.
As the Vestal Virgin they had to take vow of chastity and of obedience, but despite the severe and inflexible discipline both the religious women could enjoy particular intellectual advantages and overcome the mental invalidism, which was imposed to this sex in those times.
