Swung note - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In music, a swung note or shuffle note is the rhythmic device in which the duration of the initial note in a pair is augmented and that of the second is diminished.
Composers sometimes indicate swing rhythms by marking their scores with an indication that pairs of eighth notes should be treated as a quarter and an eighth in a triplet bracket.
Since a swung note is actually not a note of the named length (a swung eighth note is not an eighth note), some musicians consider this term a misnomer.

However, in jazz and blues eighth notes are often played unevenly, with the first eighth of each pair a little longer than the second.
The precise notation of swung eighths is not possible in western musical notation, and the effect is best appreciated by listening to the music.
Boogie woogie is sometimes played using straight eighths, but most often the eighths are swung.

 Feel the Beat: swing
Here is an example I cooked up: a rhythm 'n' blues kind of groove, with straight eighths (movie: large, small), and the same, with swing feel (movie: large, small).
You hear the same happening in the drum: the hi-hat - which is the only instrument in the drum set that plays consistently eighth notes; the bass drum and the snare only occasionally play other than on the beat - has every other hit shifted back in the swing rhythm (straight: midi; swing: midi).
eighth notes are pretty much at 2/3 of the beat.

Steps are counted 1 (eighth), and (eighth), 2 (quarter), 3(eighth), and (eighth), 4 (quarter), rock (5, quarter), step (6, quarter).
One should note that swing music is played with "swung" eighth notes, meaning of a pair of eighth notes is not exactly evenly counted, the first one having slightly more weight/length.
Again, note the "swung" eighth notes, (a pair of eighth notes is not exactly evenly counted, the first one having slightly more weight/length).

Also, by remote and mechanical manipulation of the suction pipe, sometimes the suction pipe was swung forcefully against the sides of the wagon or trailer resulting in damage to the sides of the wagon or trailer or deformation of the sheet metal of which the outer barrel was constructed.
In this instance a chain is swung from the pivot frame and a hook is placed on the top end of the outer barrel.
Then with a remote control mechanism the suction pipe may be fully raised or retracted and swung to the side where the chain is located.

He mentioned that Hubbard's eighth notes were more legato and smooth as opposed to the way Clifford Brown used to play eighth notes.
Anyway, to apply practicing eighth notes to the Free practice that he mentioned above, you simply play eighth notes (which implies no freedom of tempo) in a free harmonic setting.
As an extension of the eighth note thing, Hagans mentioned that, in learning how to play fast, you simply do the Free eighth note playing at the fastest tempo you can play it at.

Sax on the Web - BASIC ROCK & ROLL THEORY
Once that Latin American influence was there, of course the straight eighth note rule of Latin American rhythms was broken and a rhumba style bass groove also could be “swung”.
There may be a very slight difference in interpretation of where the beat landed or how much the eighth notes were swung as this added some tension to the feel, but generally they aimed to play the same rhythms.
Sometimes this rule is broken in rock and roll, and straight eights are played against swung eights or triplets and vice versa.

Continuous Wave Transmission by Amateurs (1922)
On nights when the stations of the Eighth District, particularly those in Ohio, were inaudible on Long Island, 2ZL, using straight or modulated C.W., was also inaudible at several Eighth District stations, listening on a pre-arranged schedule.
On nights when spark stations in the Eighth District "swung" so badly as to make consecutive reading of their signals impossible with two steps of audio-frequency amplification, the straight C.W. signals from 2ZL were reported as being good and steady, and consecutive reading was entirely possible.
After the experiments with the transmitter employing the 5-watt tubes had been carried on for several weeks at 2ZL, and the reports of the listening stations carefully studied, it became evident that the signals of such a small set were entirely satisfactory over distances up to 100 miles.
