  Dots, Ties, and Borrowed Divisions
Note: Ties may look like slurs, but they are not the same; a slur connects to notes with different pitches and is a type of articulation.
Notes in jazzy-sounding music that has a "swing" beat are often assumed to be triplet rhythms, even when they look like regular divisions; for example, two written eighth notes (or a dotted quarter-sixteenth) might sound like a triplet quarter-eighth rhythm.
Note: Some jazz musicians prefer to think of a swing rhythm as more of a heavy accent on the second eighth, rather than as a triplet rhythm, particularly when the tempo is fast.

Swung note - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In music, a swung note or shuffle note is the rhythmic device in which the duration of the initial note in a pair is augmented and that of the second is diminished.
Notes that are not swung are known as straight notes.
Since a swung note is actually not a note of the named length (a swung eighth note is not an eighth note), some musicians consider this term a misnomer.

Music Theory: Reading Music: Notating Rhythm
Whenever a quarter note occurs in the score, this indicates that the musician is to play a note that lasts for one beat.
A dot may be added to the right of a note to indicate its length is to be increased by half.
While the quarter note is the usual unit for the beat, it is not uncommon to use the half note or the eighth note.

In jazz and blues, blue notes are notes sung or played at a lower pitch than those of the major scale for expressive purposes.
Playing a note ever-so-slightly before or after a beat is another form of syncopation because this produces an unexpected accent.
A Swing or Swung note is a rhythmic device, also known as a shuffle note; it is an augmentation of the initial note in a pair and diminution of the second.

Note value - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In music notation, a note value indicates the relative duration of a note, using the color or shape of the note head, the presence or absence of a stem, and the presence or absence of flags.
In the 13th century, chant was sometimes performed according to rhythmic modes, roughly equivalent to meters; however, the note shapes still did not indicate duration in the same way as modern note values.
However the crotchet is named after the shape of the note, from the Old French for a 'little hook', and it is possible to argue that the same is true of the minim, since the word is also used in palaeography to mean a vertical stroke in mediaeval handwriting.

It includes the standard note names A through G, plus sharp (#) and flat (b) signs, as well as conventional names for chords, such as major and minor, aug7, etc. There are different versions of this notation, some favored by jazz musicians, others by classical, but they are all basically the same.
Note that swung rhythms are often notated as simple eighths.
Note that the number of scale steps is one less than the conventional 7-tone name for an interval.

This means that every beat - quarter note - gets subdivided once and that the split point - which in for instance chacha music would be an eighth note, that is exactly in the middle - is shifted back a bit.
You hear the same happening in the drum: the hi-hat - which is the only instrument in the drum set that plays consistently eighth notes; the bass drum and the snare only occasionally play other than on the beat - has every other hit shifted back in the swing rhythm (straight: midi; swing: midi).
That is, there is a note that takes 2/3 of the beat, followed by one that takes 1/3 of the beat.

If you set a tempo track as described in user tip #53 they will play "swung," depending on whether they occur on the downbeat or upbeat portion.
I use the method described in user tip #103 myself, as I have found that one to be the least complicated.
If your tempo (for example) is q=84, then after creating a tempo track as instructed in user tip #103, simply place a new tempo mark [q=84] on the beat(s) that have the 16th notes.

 What is swing music?
If the music is played in a swing style, however, one of the notes in a pair 'steals' some of the other one's duration, so that they now of unequal length, the first of a pair usually being the one that gains duration and the second the one that loses duration.
Note that this is how the music is PLAYED; it is still written 'straight', but transformed into swing time by the player(s).
Swing, which evolved slowly since the 1890s (when the stride bass of Blues music began to acquire uneven notes, for at least small parts of pieces), became really popular from the very late 1920s, after the Charleston Era was over.

The Session: Discussions - "Swung" tunes - what does this mean?
The term 'swung', presumably borrowed from jazz, is a convenient shorthand - but not ideal, since the 'swing' in a hornpipe is not the same as the 'swing' in jazz.
With a due respect to Phantom B, i have to disagree with the notion that swing in ITM involves an uneven timing/spacing--i mean, yes, you can do that, but it produces a "yippidie-dippidie" type of swing that I think sounds picayune to my ears.
Some strathspeys and barndances and the like can offer a little chuckle when you swing it all and then for a short section, a few notes for lead-in or a run of several, you take it completely straight, which can be a nice contrast to what might be a regular and established swing.
