  Off The Shelf - "Sybil"
Sybil Dorsett, commonly known only by her first name, to this day remains one of the greatest documented cases of multiple personality disorder (MSD) in the psychology field.
Due to the years that Dr. Wilbur spent with Sybil and the huge collections of data and psycho-analysis information that she collected on her, it was Sybil's case that brought about a revolution in the psychology field - and spawned revelations on the idea of "I" ("id") and theological discussion as well.
The book itself is also well-written and since it was written from the standpoint of a friend to the case and not the psychologist who treated her, it is easy to follow, read and rife with laymen's terms that most would have no difficulty in following.

 Fright Site, Sybil Movie Review
SYBIL remains a superbly acted, one-of-a-kind achievement that has yet to be surpassed as the definitive cinematic treatment on multiple personality disorder.
SYBIL started life as a 1974 bestseller by Flora Rheta Schreiber, an absorbing account of the pseudonymous Sybil's struggles with multiple personality disorder and the 11-year psychiatric treatment that helped to integrate her sixteen personalities into one.
The book's authenticity has been called into question in recent years, but the real "Sybil," the late Shirley Ardell Mason, insisted up to her death in 1998 that "every word" was true.

Plot Outline: The true story of a young woman named Sybil, whose childhood was so harrowing to her that she developed at least 13 different personalities.
I recently saw this on video which was pared down from the original TV-version length of 198 minutes(my copy was roughly two hours and twelve minutes and omitted several strong scenes); I'm fortunate to remember that original version, which had a strong, sensitive ending wherein all Sybil's personalities faced her in the park.
Many moments resonate with tenderness, although I'm not sure Sybil's eventual exclamation of hatred in remembrance of her abusive mother is conducive to her forgiving the evil woman(the movie seems to treat them one and the same).
