Labour's gain in Portsmouth North was one of the first results to be announced on election night in 1997, and the 14% swing with which long-time local leader Syd Rapson won the seat was an indication of what would happen in many southern marginals.
North was Labour in 1974 but became overwhelmingly Tory in the Thatcher years before swinging back with considerable violence.
The Conservatives must feel pretty confident of regaining this marginal even if they don't manage to win nationally, but if the Labour vote can be brought out to the polling stations as it was not in 1999 and 2000 Rapson will be in again.
