The line is quadruplicated to South Kensington railway station, Melbourne, then double-tracked for the rest of the line, although from South Kensington to Footscray it runs alongside the Werribee line, effectively extending the quadruplicated track to there.
The line is also parallelled by a double-tracked goods line and the interstate standard gauge line, the latter being dual-gauged with the goods line to West Footscray.
The goods line joins the Sydenham line at Sunshine, whilst the standard gauge line to Sydney continues to run alongside the suburban line to Albion, where it and a goods line heads off in a north-easterly direction.

The area was primarily agricultural and the township grew around the Railway station constructed on the dual track Melbourne to Bendigo rail line.
With the continued development of the Sydenham area as part of the growth of the metropolitan area of Melbourne onto the northwest plains the character of that area has been dramatically changed by closer settlement and the need to provide services to a rapidly growing population.
For Sydenham however only the name remains and the small town that was only exists now in the memories of the families that remain within the area and in the one physical structure - the original Sydenham Station.

Also the rail line would be underground, with development over the top, not slicing the activity centrte into two halves.
One point I do agree on though is the electrified rail line, how stupid to not place it underground, and the fact that it cuts the transit city is half is very poor planning with little foresight.
Sydenham is closer to the city than Dandenong, Ringwood or Frankston and is in a great location will excellent rail and road links to the city.
