  The Parish of Sydling St Nicholas
Sydling St Nicholas is a parish and a village 8 miles north-west from Dorchester in the Cerne valley.
Although the church of St Nicholas stands on the site of earlier churches the earliest part of the present church is the tower which dates from the 1430's.
Sydling Court is adjacent to the Church and was the seat of the Smith family for many generations.

James Crabb was born on 11th April 1883 at Loscombe in the parish of Netherbury, to the south of Beaminster in Dorset.
This served Sydling and Magiston, as well as Grimstone, Stratton and Wreckleford on the main Yeovil to Dorchester road.
In the motor age Sydling village was served by two bus services, one run by the Terrell family, the other by the Crabbs.

I think it was because Sydling has the air of a working village with its people going about their business with little regard for the tourist who might wander through (although they sure spotted me) while Cerne Abbas is all tarted up.
Today the occupations of the residents are quite diverse, many traveling a great distance to their various employment's; but most of the land is still given over to agriculture and large flocks of sheep look just as at home as they did in 1550 when 2,700 sheep were kept on one farm alone.

In the next valley over to the east from Cattistock lies the village of Sydling St Nicholas, which enjoyed the luxury of two operators (Albert Lovell and Jimmy Crabb in post-war years; Crabb and Frank Terrell pre-war), both providing near identical services into the county town of Dorchester.
Jimmy Crabb, farmer, carrier and coal merchant of South View Farm, Sydling died in the village in 1950 at the age of 67, followed twelve years later by his wife Nellie also aged 67.
In 2004 Rampisham has lost all its buses and Sydling St Nicholas has only one bus on a Wednesday service to Dorchester and Weymouth that comes through from Broadwindsor on First route 213.

When James and Nellie returned to the Sydling after their marriage a group of villages met them at the parish boundary removed the horse from the shafts and "pulled them in".
When James died the Crabb family lost the tenancy of South View farm and his widow Nellie and the girls moved to Hit or Miss house, a few hundred yards down the road.
