Cricinfo - Players and Officials - Sydney Barnes
Sydney Francis Barnes was the second son of five children of Richard Barnes who spent nearly all his life in Staffordshire and worked for a Birmingham firm for 63 years.
Barnes was creative, one of the first bowlers really to use the seam of a new ball and combine swing so subtly with spin that few batsmen could distinguish one from the other.
The destruction wreaked by Barnes, and on all his great days, was mostly done by the ball which, bowled from a splendid height, seemed to swing in to the leg stump then spin away from the pitch, threatening the off-stump.

 Barnes
Sydney Barnes was born in the Victorian era (1837-1901) and Tut Whalley and Sir Stanley Matthews during the reign of George V (1910-36).
Barnes was first introduced to cricket at the age of 15 when he played for a local side which had its ground at the rear of the Galton Hotel, Smethwick.
Barnes played a total of only 27 Test matches, 20 of them against the arch enemy, Australia, and he took 189 wickets for an average of 16.43 runs each- 106 wickets against Australia for 21.58 runs each and 83 against South Africa for only 9.85 each.

 Cricinfo - Sidney Barnes
Barnes started his Australian tour in astonishing form, and was, up to a certain point, the success of the English Eleven.
Warner said: Barnes certainly did not bowl one really bad ball during the two innings of the Gentlemen, and a finer bowler I have never played, and in saying this I do not forget Lockwood or Trumble, or the best of the South African bowlers.
There can be little doubt that Barnes profits by playing comparatively little cricket, which enables him to keep fresh, and to come to each match full of energy and life, but for all that it is a pity he is not more often seen in first-class cricket.

Cricinfo - Sydney Barnes - cricket's living legend
Barnes added to it a sustained hostility and remarkable stamina, which were reflected in constant, unrelenting probing for a batsman's weakness and then attacking it by surprise, each ball fitting into a tactical pattern.
Barnes began the tour with five wickets in the match against South Australia, twelve against Victoria and five against New South Wales.
Hence the classic Sydney Barnes story of the day when two tail-enders were playing at him and missing or, occasionally, snicking, and he stalked away at the end of the over with the comment `They aren't batting well enough to get out.'

England overcame defeat in the opening Test at Sydney to record a comprehensive 4-1 victory, thanks largely to the efforts of Sydney Barnes, Frank Foster and Jack Hobbs.
Barnes, aged 38, returned to England with a record series haul of 34 wickets (at 22.88), while Foster (32 wickets at 21.62 and 226 runs at 32.29) and Hobbs (662 runs at 82.75) both flourished as England regained the Ashes.
Victor Trumper's sixth Test hundred against England and 12 wickets from googly bowler Dr Ranji Hordern set the home team up for their initial win at Sydney, but once Barnes had let rip at Melbourne it was a fairly one-sided affair thereafter.
