  Sydney Buxton, 1st Earl Buxton - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sydney Charles Buxton, 1st Earl Buxton was the Governor-General of the Union of South Africa from 1914 to 1920.
He was created Viscount Buxton, of Newtimber in the County of Sussex, in 1914, and advanced as Earl Buxton in 1920.

Administrative/Biographical history: Dudley Wilmot Buxton, born in 1855, was educated at University College London and University College Hospital, qualifying MB and BS in 1882 and MD in 1883.
Buxton's influence was considerable: he believed that every doctor entering practice should have a competent knowledge of anaesthetics, a subject that had not been taught until the end of the nineteeth century.
Scope and content/abstract: Material comprises typescript papers by Buxton on anaesthesia and dentistry, and notes by Buxton on The muscles of the human body grouped according to their action, with their vascular and nervous supply, C J Manning and F H Elliot (London: H K Lewis, 1875).

It is known that as early as 1890, he had discussed with the American Postmaster General, John Wanamaker, the possibilities of cheap trans-Atlantic mail.
In 1906 a deputation of British members of parliment proposed the scheme to the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Sydney Buxton.
The chancellor opposed the scheme on financial grounds, even declining Heaton's offer, (which was backed by Andrew Carnegie, Sir Edward Sassoon, Lord Blyth and Wanamaker), to guarentee the Post Office against any loss for five years.
