Lau, on a four-day visit to Sydney, said Beijing and Hong Kong's new chief executive Tung Chee-hwa aspired to the "economic authoritarianism" of Southeast Asian nations now suffering financial turmoil.
Lau said that since the Chinese handover, Hong Kong had been allowed to operate freely, but the rush for "commercial advantages, political patronage and personal glorification" had seen some people surrender the territory's freedom and autonomy.

Lau performed his docotral work in the Spoken Language Systems Group at the MIT Laboratory for Computer Science (now part of the MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory).
Lau's doctoral dissertation, completed in March 1998, was in the area of subword linguistic modelling for speech recognition, that is, using word substructures such as syllables for better recognition, at SLS under the direction of Dr. Stephanie Seneff.

Sydney's Chinese name, Lau Sien Mai, was chosen by David's father, Dickson Lau, long before "baby beanie" was born - putting David and Lisa in a distant second-place running in the name game.

Ling San Lau: Yes, that project involved looking at the commercial potential of Tasmanian eucalypt dyes, so basically I extracted dyes from all 29 species of Tasmania eucalypts, and looked at the different colours which I got from that, and I also tested their colour-fastness.

Hamish Ford is a Sydney writer who teaches film studies at UTS, USYD and UNSW, where he also completed a PhD on European modernist cinema of the 1960s.
Despite procuring State Government funding, the 52nd Sydney Film Festival featured a reduced number of films (170) compared to previous years, the most notable effect of the management's efforts to “save” the event from economic ruin.
While I certainly enjoyed some of the films, judged in terms of quantity and variety, and for the lack of a substantial retrospective program, the 2005 Sydney Film Festival was on balance one of the poorer festivals of recent years.
