 The Gold Rush
Legislation for the establishment of a branch of the London Royal Mint in Sydney was announced in August, 1853.
Ironically, the new mint was to be housed in part of the old Rum Hospital which itself owes its existence to 'currency' of another kind.
They were struck at the Sydney mint and should not be confused with their English counterparts which were struck in larger numbers.

The South Wing officially became the Sydney branch of the Royal Mint In 1854.
In 1993-5 the museum was re-developed as the Sydney Mint Museum, focussing on the impact of the Gold Rush years on New South Wales and the role of The Mint as a coining factory.
The property, comprising The Mint Offices and courtyard was transferred to the Historic Houses Trust in 1998.

Throughout most of this period, the Royal Mint, which was always located in London until the 1960's, but is now at Llantrisant in South Wales, has been one of the few mints in the world which does not normally use a mintmark, at least for British coins.
Branch mints were opened to coin the gold into gold sovereigns and half sovereigns in these territories, rather than transport it back to Britain for coining.
On the milled edge of the coin is the Llantrisant mint mark - a cross crosslet.

Although well over a million halfpennies were produced in 1923, the Sydney mint used 1922 dies to produce the coins.
The Melbourne Mint was tasked in 1923 to produce close to 500,000 coins and it is believed they made three sets of 1923 dies to produce these coins.
The coin is a 60.5 gram mass of silver with a gold plated depiction of the 1953 Sydney Mint Sovereign in its' centre.

All twelve dies were shipped to the Sydney Mint, and are recorded in the Sydney Mint's die account book as having arrived there on 17/5/23.
Since none of the dies was retained in Melbourne, it seems quite likely that the 200,000 coins minted there were struck using the 1922 dies.
