Armchair Theatre - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Newman had a passion for socially-relevant, challenging drama that tackled sensitive issues, and turned Armchair Theatre into a vehicle for the generation of 'Angry Young Men' such as Clive Exton who were coming to prominence in the late 1950s and early 60s.
Sydney Newman ordered director William Kotcheff to carry on with the play and "shoot it like a football match", meaning to follow the characters around as they improvised a way of coping with the missing cast member.
This latter programme was initiated by Sydney Newman as a deliberate attempt to echo the success of Armchair Theatre after he had moved to the BBC in 1963.

 Newman, Sydney
Newman discovered and nurtured new writers, some of whom were to become the best of their generation, including Clive Exton, Alun Owen, and Harold Pinter.
Newman's real insight--and the real difference with the BBC of the late 1950s--was his estimation of the television audience as discerning, intelligent and capable to handle new and innovative subject matter.
However, it was the newness and innovation which Newman encouraged in his drama output that is most significant: his concentration on the potential of television as television, for a mass not a middlebrow audience.

ARMCHAIR THEATRE | A TELEVISION HEAVEN REVIEW
When Newman arrived in England in 1958 he immediately picked up on the 'class system' that was an inherent part of everyday life, and which also spilled over into the theatre as well as television drama.
Newman's approach was to abandon established dramas and go for a gritty realism with a series of specially commissioned plays by young playwrights such as Harold Pinter, Robert Miller, Ray Rigby and Alun Owen.
That it's reputation still stands as that today is as much a testimony to Sydney Newman as it is to the many producers, directors, writers and actors that made it not only possible, but also a joy to watch.

So Newman and White teamed up to rework the ailing show to fit its star into the new formula, a formula that was also to include a secret agent.
Newman had worked with Patrick Macnee producing a television project two years prior, and invited him to appear on the show as the mysterious spy John Steed.

Newman was a Canadian who came to the UK from Hollywood in the late 1950s.
Newman also insisted that the Doctor be played with a good deal of humour (as he would be until 1982), after seeing the slightly dour pilot episode.
Newman also remained determined throughout, that the series would represent intelligent, thought-provoking science fiction, rather than B-movie cliches (thus putting a sanction on "bug-eyed monsters" - though fortunately he relented on this point).

One of the driving forces behind their experimentation was Canadian producer Sydney Newman, who had been tempted over from Canada to become the Head of Drama at the ABC company (ITV franchise holders for the Midlands and the North at weekends and one of the providers of programmes for the entire network).
The second was that Sydney Newman was tempted away from the ABC to take up the position of Head of Drama at the BBC, joining the Corporation in December.
These two events led in 1963 to the BBC developing an idea of Newman’s into Britain’s first long-running science-fiction television series, a programme that would go on for year after year rather than simply being a one-off serial with perhaps a sequel or two as had previously been the pattern.

 The Wednesday Play
A to Z of TV Now regarded as a shining light of British television's golden age, The Wednesday Play is often held up as the perfect example of the impact that television had on a generation of viewers, and just how much that impact has diminished in more recent years.
Newman had already scored outstanding success on ATV with Armchair Theatre (see review on this website) and changed the face of the televised drama in the UK.
Newman's brief was for a series of plays that would be relevant to the lives of a mainstream popular audience, using the talents of fresh new writers to television.

Doctor Who LogBook - Introduction - The Hartnell Years
For an encore, Newman wanted to venture into the realm of science fiction, but his aim there was also Earthbound: Doctor Who would take his timeship full of companions on journeys through our own history, not on voyages to other worlds.
To this end, Newman and the BBC entrusted the Doctor Who concept to Verity Lambert, a young producer (and, atypically at the time for that job, a woman) with the drive and vision to shepherd the series through the then-normal 52-week production schedule, effectively keeping the show on the air year-round.
