Education Kit for Wimmera (from Mount Arapiles) by Sidney Nolan
Nolan became a foundation member of the Contemporary Art Society, which was instigated by John Reed in opposition to the conservative Australian Academy of Art.
Nolan was a fast and prolific painter, a painting may be executed in a single session, although its conception is usually a matter of weeks.
Nolan thus, in an almost simplistic but well-devised style, captures the marginal flat lands of Australia in an honest, direct and objective manner.

 Nolan's vision - theage.com.au
Nolan’s unique vision, combined with his equally unusual technique of working with enamel paint and oil on composition board, glass and paper, had both an overwhelming impact on Australian audiences and launched his international career.
Nolan’s Queensland subjects of proprietors standing in front of their premises (with the occasional bird flying upside down in the sky) distilled an innovative and somewhat quirky vision of the relationship between European Australians and the landscape.
Nolan made numerous notes, which were less descriptive than usual, yet their bluntness added further poignancy and also alluded to his future departure from Australia.

Sidney Nolan is best known for his 1940s and '50s paintings of Ned Kelly, iconic outlaw of the Australian outback, in which the extraordinary Australian landscape itself plays a formidable part.
This is also the first book to deal fully with Nolan’s multi-faceted work as a painter of literary themes, and as a book illustrator, theatre designer and even, briefly, sculptor.
The art critic and broadcaster T.G. Rosenthal, who knew Sidney Nolan well from 1960 until his death in 1992, guides the reader with assurance through the art produced during the long and brilliant career of this witty and deeply intelligent painter.

 Russell Drysdale 1950-1981
Although Sydney Nolan's series of Ned Kelly paintings had been shown at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris in 1948, they received little attention and were not reviewed.
Nolan, Tucker, Arthur and David Boyd, Sali Herman (1898-1937), Clifton Pugh (1924-90) and Lawrence Daws (born 1927), all of whom gained overseas reputations during this period, imagined the outback in a variety of guises, including biblical scenes, classical mythology and subjects from Australian history, all of which added levels of meaning to their setting.
In 1960, at the age of 48, Russell Drysdale was honoured by a retrospective exhibition at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, the first Australian artist of his generation to be given a retrospective in his lifetime at a major Australian public institution.

In Perished Nolan depicted the dead body of Burke within a harsh and desolate Australian outback scene, with a group of eucalyptus trees on the horizon creating a metaphorical image of the regenerative forces of nature, and suggesting that life endures even on this lonely grave.

 A Biography of Kate Coolahan
Kate Coolahan was born in 1929, in Sydney.
In 1945 the East Sydney Technical College was a thriving institution, affected firstly by the influx of Jewish refugees who fled to Sydney before the war, bringing European modernism with them; and secondly by the return of soldiers from World War Two, many of whom attended East Sydney as part of their rehabilitation.
After living in cosmopolitan Sydney, New Zealand was astounding; the scenery here won Kate's heart; she sent a telegram to her husband, telling him to sell everything and come over, and they made their home in Wellington.

Burke provides no conclusive evidence that Sunday helped Nolan paint, as the author would have us believe when she asserts: ‘Sunday’s contribution to the [Kelly] series was profound, and profoundly practical.
