Digital Travels: Sydney Royal Easter Show
Over the years the show has evolved from its humble beginnings in Parramatta, west of Sydney, where one William Bull was awarded a prize for “good conduct and faithful service,” to become one of Australia’s finest examples of public-inspiring celebration.
From here the show quickly developed its own persona; fireworks were used for the first time in 1884, and the first grandstand was erected in 1886.
Freak shows, rodeos, exotic performers, commercial exhibitors (yes, this was considered strange in 1935), “real” American cowboys, a flea circus, Ferris wheels and even the Queen of England made their appearance at the show.

It was the cat show that coaxed us there on Easter Monday, the eleventh day of the two-week event and the first of a week without school or uni.
(The pigs and sheep were showing on other days of the show.) There was not much opportunity to see the animals up close, except for the ones in the front pens, because the public could only walk along one side of the huge barns that housed the animals and their pens.
The folks at the Royal Easter Show had at least tried to minimize some of that down time between events by using funky above-ground stands to hold the trees that would be chopped down shortly.
