Sydney occupies two geographical regions: the Cumberland Plain, a relatively flat or rolling region lying to the south and west of the harbour, and the Hornsby Plateau, a plateau north of the harbour, up to 200 m in elevation, dissected by forested valleys.

The latest Sydney fires, many of which are suspected to be the work of arsonists, are the worst since 1994 when four people perished.

Medium density housing developments in Sydney's middle ring suburbs will increasingly be forced to the outer suburbs over the next five years, a report showed on Friday.
The report by economic and industry sector forecaster and analyst BIS Shrapnel found that the progress of the medium and high density dwelling markets will be determined suburb-by-suburb by the availability of suitable land for development and land prices.
Entitled Medium and High Density Dwellings in Sydney Suburbs, 2004 to 2009 the report said this recovery would, however, be stifled by rising interest rates, which would once again deter investors.

SYDNEY - Firefighters battled more than 70 blazes along the drought-gripped eastern seaboard of Australia this week as the annual bushfire season kicked in with a vengeance, razing 10 homes on the rim of the nation's main city, Sydney.
Fire officials said there were 47 bush and grass fires burning around Sydney alone, with the worst destroying up to 10 homes in the southern suburb of Engadine, damaging several more and forcing around 200 people to be evacuated.
This year, with most of New South Wales state in the grip of a fierce drought, compounded by the El Nino weather event, and Sydney having had its third-driest winter on record, the fire service has been warning the bushfires could be far worse.

Sydney had been ringed by bushfires to its north, south and west since Christmas Day but Tuesday's outbreak in Pennant Hills in the city's bushy northern suburbs was the first to penetrate the suburbs.
A spokesman for the Rural Fire Service said the blaze, less than 20 km (12 miles) from the city centre, was "very serious" but that residents were being advised not to evacuate their homes.

By 7pm it was obvious on both radar and visually (my home is about 40km from the coast) that the storm was moving directly NNE and heading straight into the southern Sydney suburbs.
Radar showed the most intense part of the storm was right over the eastern suburbs and city and would have been smashing these areas with hail officially measured to 9cm diameter, with larger stones probable.
Most notably, the supercell hailstorm of Sunday 18th March 1990 affecting the western suburbs, and the supercell of Monday 21st January 1991 affecting the northern suburbs.
