As William D. Sylva, a wandering Dane, rode along with Judge Riley D. Cannon to his Scott’s Creek mills that snowy January morning 122 years ago, fate was about to name a new town for him.
And Sylva was shut-mouthed as a clam about where he came from and what he had done.
In 1951, the year of Jackson County’s centennial, a daughter in Cleburne, Texas, wrote to S. Monteith in Sylva that William Demetrius Sylva was her father that he had passed away in 1927.

A brick courthouse was erected and was used until the county seat was moved to Sylva in 1913.
A handsome new courthouse was constructed in 1914 on a hillside in Sylva and remained in use until the Jackson County Justice and Administration Building was completed in August 1994.
Sylva, the county seat of Jackson County, is in the northwestern section of the county.

He later became a president of the Rotary Club of Sylva, as would his son, Reginald, and his grandson, Reginald Moody Sr.; Scroop was still a member of the club at its 25th anniversary in 1953.
He was mayor of Sylva in 1920, 1925, 1927 and 1929 (and might have been Sylva's mayor in 1926, 1928 and 1930; records are incomplete).

 The Sylva Herald and Ruralite - Tuckaseigee's most damaging flood was 60 years ago
The Aug. 30-31, 1940, flood was the worst ever recorded on the Tuckaseigee River, killing four and causing property damage estimated at $2 million.
Sylva Herald Publisher Jim Gray said that for a while the only way people in Cullowhee could drive anywhere was to go out Tilley Creek (S.R. 1001) and over to Franklin and then to Bryson City and back to Sylva.
Cullowhee village on the north side of the river was almost completely destroyed, and the destruction along the river at Webster, Dillsboro, Barkers Creek, Wilmot and Whittier was terrible.
